By all outward signs, the dental profession is prospering. However, signs of a looming crisis in dental education threaten the future effectiveness of the profession. Transforming dental education through the application of principles espoused by the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (CCI) is essential for securing the future of the profession. ⋯ To accomplish this, both the curricular content and the environment and approach to dental education must change. Besides the knowledge and abilities needed to care for a more diverse and aging population, future practitioners must possess tools needed to thrive in the world of small business and have the ethical foundation to conduct themselves as responsible professionals. Ensuring the future of the profession is a leadership challenge to be shared by both dental educators and practitioners.

Randomized Controlled TrialBispectral Index in the sedation with intranasal midazolam and intravenous diazepam in dental practice.
Aim of this study was to assess by clinical evaluation and by Bispectral Index (BIS) the tranquillizing properties of diazepam injected intravenously, and midazolam by intranasal route according to the body weight in dental patients. ⋯ The study shows that nasal route ensures the quick absorption of midazolam as revealed during the first 3 min from drug administration. The depressant effect of midazolam increased as a function of time, reaching the highest levels during intervention. The results suggest that midazolam is endowed with sedative effects which may compromise the state of consciousness of the patient and be incompatible with the definition of conscious sedation in dentistry.

Clinical decision support complements evidence-based decision making in dental practice.
Dental professionals as well as consumers of dental health care are driving the demand for access to reliable information so they can make more informed decisions. Clinical decision support (CDS) includes a variety of printed and electronic tools, systems, products, and services that make knowledge and information available to the user. CDS is the main way people will be able to access important facts, ideas, concepts, and the latest thinking about personal and population-based health subjects. CDS has its greatest potential at the point of care where it can facilitate good-quality evidence-based decision-making.

Information on the reproductive effects of chemical exposures in dental work is sparse or inconsistent. ⋯ No strong association or consistent dose-response relationship was observed between exposure to chemical agents in dental work and the risk of miscarriage. A slightly increased risk was found for exposure to mercury amalgam, some acrylate compounds, solvents and disinfectants. These findings indicate that the possibility of a weak association between exposure to these agents and an increased risk of miscarriage cannot be excluded.
