This is the 15th article in a continuing series of "off-service" goals and objectives for resident education in emergency medicine. Knowledge and skills in providing anesthesia and analgesia are essential in managing patients in the emergency department, critical care unit, and surgery. However, Anesthesiology off-service rotations are often limited to a 2-week rotation. Therefore, clear goals and objectives in Anesthesiology are essential for the resident in training.

To assess the impact of the introduction of an emergency medicine residency program on the quality of care in an urban community hospital emergency department. ⋯ As measured by a process evaluation, documentation of the medical record, the introduction of an emergency medicine residency significantly improved the quality of care in this urban community hospital ED.

To test the hypothesis that residency-trained emergency physicians who left the practice of emergency medicine do not differ significantly from those who continue to practice. ⋯ Career longevity of residency-trained emergency physicians has been greater than early predictions. Interactions with residents, higher income, satisfaction with training decision, and board certification in emergency medicine are variables associated with a higher retention rate.
