Multicenter StudyFamily presence during resuscitation (FPDR): A survey of emergency personnel in Victoria, Australia.
Family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) has been endorsed internationally by resuscitation councils since the year 2000; however, the extent to which FPDR is practiced in emergency settings requires further investigation. ⋯ A family support person was highlighted as essential to the successful implementation of FPDR, together with the development of a comprehensive training the education program for emergency personnel. FPDR continues to be a significant issue and further investigation into FPDR practice and implementation in the ED is warranted.

An application of the learning curve-cumulative summation test to evaluate training for endotracheal intubation in emergency medicine.
The learning curve-cumulative summation (LC-CUSUM) test allows for quantitative and individual assessments of the learning process. In this study, we evaluated the process of skill acquisition for performing endotracheal intubation (ETI) in three emergency medicine (EM) residents over a 2 year period in their first 2 years of their EM residency. ⋯ By using the LC-CUSUM test, we were able to quantitatively monitor the acquisition of the skill of ETI by EM residents. The LC-CUSUM could be useful for monitoring the learning process for the training of airway management in the practice of EM.

Moral experience and ethical challenges in an emergency department in Pakistan: emergency physicians' perspectives.
Emergency departments (ED) are often stressful environments posing unique ethical challenges-issues that primarily raise moral rather than clinical concerns-in patient care. Despite this, there are very few reports of what emergency physicians find ethically challenging in their everyday work. Emergency medicine (EM) is a relatively young but rapidly growing specialty that is gaining acceptance worldwide. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of EM residents and physicians regarding the common ethical challenges they face during patient care in one of only two academic EM departments in Pakistan. These challenges could then be addressed in residents' training and departmental practice guidelines. ⋯ The study highlights the need for developing systematic and contextually appropriate mechanisms for resolving common ethical challenges in the EDs and for training residents in moral problem solving.

Multicenter StudyDiagnostic performance of cardiac Troponin I for early rule-in and rule-out of acute myocardial infarction: Results of a prospective multicenter trial.
To compare emergency department TnI serial sampling intervals, determine optimal diagnostic thresholds, and report representative diagnostic performance characteristics for early rule-in and rule-out of MI. ⋯ We report a large multicenter prospective adjudicated trial assessing troponin for early rule-in and rule-out using the Universal Definition of MI and conducted in primary care hospital-associated emergency departments. Our study demonstrates high diagnostic accuracy at early observation times, and reinforces consensus recommendations for sampling on admission and 3h later, repeated at 6h when clinical suspicion remains high.

Medical Student Perceptions on the Instruction of the Emergency Medicine Oral Case Presentation.
The emergency medicine oral case presentation (EM OCP) is the clinician's communication tool to justify whether urgent intervention is required, to argue for ruling out emergent disease states, and to propose safe disposition plans in the context of triaging patients for medical care and prioritization of resources. The EM OCP provides the representation of the practice of emergency medicine, yet we do not know the current level of effectiveness of its instruction. ⋯ This study identifies a need for additional specific and consistent teaching of the EM OCP to medical students and their preference on how to receive this instruction.
