The use of a self-check-in kiosk for early patient identification and queuing in the emergency department.
Delays in triage processes in the emergency department (ED) can compromise patient safety. The aim of this study was to provide proof-of-concept that a self-check-in kiosk could decrease the time needed to identify ambulatory patients arriving in the ED. We compared the use of a novel automated self-check-in kiosk to identify patients on ED arrival to routine nurse-initiated patient identification. ⋯ A self-check-in kiosk significantly reduced the time-to-first-identification for ambulatory patients arriving in the ED.

The Utility and Survivorship of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters Inserted in the Emergency Department.
We compare the use and survivorship rate of peripheral intravenous catheters placed in the emergency department (ED) by insertion method. ⋯ ED-inserted peripheral intravenous catheters were frequently used in the ED and hospital. Peripheral intravenous use and hospital survivorship of ED-inserted peripheral intravenous catheters were similar by insertion method.

Point-of-care ultrasound before attempting clean-catch urine collection in infants: a randomized controlled trial.
A new non-invasive bladder stimulation technique has been described to obtain clean-catch urine specimens in infants. This study aimed to evaluate if point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) guided feeding protocol to measure bladder volume prior to stimulation techniques improves clean-catch urine collection success. ⋯ NCT02751671.

Using Buzzy, Shotblocker, and Bubble Blowing in a Pediatric Emergency Department to Reduce the Pain and Fear Caused by Intramuscular Injection: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Procedural pain in general, and intramuscular (IM) injection pain in particular, is one of the most distressing and painful health care experiences for children. Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic methods are used as forms of pain control for children undergoing acute painful interventions in emergency departments. ⋯ The Buzzy intervention should be used when children are undergoing IM injections to reduce their levels of pain and fear.

Contamination in Adult Midstream Clean-Catch Urine Cultures in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
A midstream clean-catch urine sample is recommended to obtain a urine culture in symptomatic adults with suspected urinary tract infection. The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to determine whether a novel funnel urine-collection system combined with a silver-colloidal cleaning wipe would decrease mixed flora contamination in midstream clean-catch urine cultures from ambulatory adults in the emergency department. ⋯ The use of a funnel urine-collection system and silver-impregnated wipe did not reduce urine-culture contamination in adult midstream clean-catch urine cultures in the emergency department.
