To better identify women at risk for intimate partner violence (IPV), we developed a diagnostic protocol composed of injury location and response to a verbal questionnaire to identify women at high risk for reporting an IPV-related injury etiology. The purpose of this study was to test the external validity of the protocol when applied at two institutions that differ considerably in terms of geography and socioeconomic measures. ⋯ Despite significant geographic and socioeconomic differences between the two hospitals, the results suggest that our protocol may be applicable in disparate clinical settings.

Patient expectations of emergency department care: phase II--a cross-sectional survey.
To explore emergency department (ED) patient expectations regarding staff communication with patients, wait times, the triage process and information management. ⋯ ED patient expectations appear to be similar across all triage levels. Patients value effective communication and short wait times over many other aspects of care. They have expectations for short wait times that are met infrequently and are currently unattainable in many Canadian EDs. Although it may be neither feasible nor desirable to meet all patient expectations, increased focus on wait times and staff communication may increase both ED efficiency and patient satisfaction.

Change in approach and delivery of medical care in children with asthma: results from a multicenter emergency department educational asthma management program.
The Hawaii Child Asthma Research to Elevate Standards (CARES) Program implemented an emergency department (ED)-based education and management program to facilitate National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) guideline understanding among asthmatic children and their families, ED staff, and health care providers. ⋯ An ED-based childhood asthma tracking system can serve as a basis for designing and implementing an ED-based educational intervention. ED staff, primary care providers, and others can work together to promote asthma care.

Pneumatic tube delivery system for blood samples reduces turnaround times without affecting sample quality.
In this study, blood samples from ED patients that were delivered to the laboratory by a pneumatic tube delivery system and by a human courier were compared for timeliness and quality of results. ⋯ The use of a pneumatic tube delivery system for transporting blood samples from the emergency department to the laboratory can significantly reduce the turnaround times of results without a reduction in sample quality.
