Electrical cardioversion of emergency department patients with atrial fibrillation.
Electrical cardioversion of emergency department (ED) patients with atrial fibrillation has not been well investigated. The objective of this study is to identify the outcomes and complications associated with ED electrical cardioversion of patients with atrial fibrillation. ⋯ In this multicenter cohort, selected ED patients with atrial fibrillation had high rates of electrical cardioversion success, infrequent hospital admission, and few immediate and short-term complications.

To evaluate the hypothesis that computed tomography (CT) angiography often yields a result interpreted as an alternative diagnosis to pulmonary embolism (PE) in emergency department (ED) patients. ⋯ In ED patients with suspected PE, the CT angiogram frequently provides evidence suggesting an important alternative diagnosis to PE. Pulmonary infiltrate suggesting pneumonia was the most common non-PE finding.

War-related psychological sequelae among emergency department patients in the former Republic of Yugoslavia.
Residents of the Republic of Serbia faced civil war and a NATO-led bombing campaign in 1999. We sought to assess the burden of metal health dysfunction among emergency department (ED) patients presenting for care three years post-war in Serbia. ⋯ Three years post-war, symptoms of PTSD and major depression in Serbia remained a significant public health concern, particularly among refugees, those suffering subsequent economic instability, and persons living in rural, remote areas.

Back for more: a qualitative study of emergency department reattendance for asthma.
To explore the reasons why individuals recurrently present with asthma to hospital emergency departments. ⋯ We identified potentially preventable issues in about a third of patients (most of whom had mild to moderate asthma) who recurrently presented to EDs for treatment. The remainder of the participants sought emergency asthma treatment appropriately after failing to respond to medical care, and this was frequently in accordance with their asthma management plans.
