Systemic Immune-inflammation Index (SII) Predicts Pathological Complete Response to Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer.
To determine the relationship between inflammatory markers and pathological complete response (pCR) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT). ⋯ Baseline SII might be an independent predictive factor for pCR in patients receiving NACRT with a diagnosis of LARC. Key Words: Locally advanced rectal cancer, Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, Pathological complete response, Inflammatory index, Systemic immune-inflammation index, SII, NLR, PLR, LMR, PNI.

Observational StudyThe Prognostic Effects of Clinicopathological Features on Rectal Cancer Patients undergoing Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy.
To investigate the effects of clinicopathological features on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in in-patients with local advanced rectal cancer (LARC) who received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). ⋯ LVI, the ypTN stage, and the pLN+ number affected the disease-free survival, while the residual tumour diameter after nCRT, ypT stage, and PNI affected the overall survival. The predicted DFS time decreased as the ypT stage increased and the predicted OS time decreased as the recurrence increased. Key Words: Rectal cancer, Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, Disease-free survival, Overall survival.

Observational StudyHealth-seeking behaviour of foreign workers in Singapore: Insights from emergency department visits.
Foreign workers (FWs) on work permit face unique health challenges and potential barriers to healthcare. We aimed to examine the epidemiology, attendance patterns, disposition, and adherence to follow-up, by FWs on work permit to two emergency departments (EDs) in Singapore. ⋯ In Singapore, the EDs of public restructured hospitals provide healthcare safety nets to FWs on work permit. These workers made more low-acuity visits compared to the general population during the study period and may face potential barriers to admission and follow-up.

Observational StudyEffects of Preoperative Statin on the Frequency of Ventricular Fibrillation and C-Reactive Protein Level in Patients Undergoing Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
To investigate the effects of statin use in preoperative period on the development of ventricular fibrillation (VF) following the removal of aortic cross-clamp (ACC) and on the levels of inflammation biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients who undergo elective isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ Preoperative statin use significantly reduced VF development after the removal of ACC, and decreased postoperative CRP levels. Key Words: Coronary artery bypass grafting, Statins, Pleiotropic effect, Ventricular fibrillation, C-reactive protein.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent and potentially fatal disease, but its pathophysiology is incompletely understood. microRNAs (miR) dysregulate hemostatic proteins and influence thrombotic pathology by posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression. Consensus in defining VTE-related miR clusters and functionally relevant miR has not been reached. We aimed to generate a miR database in patients at high thrombotic risk of VTE and explored their biological functions by seeking information on their messenger RNA targets. ⋯ We provide evidence of distinct, independently validated miR signatures in patients with VTE and identified a subset of miR as main regulators of messenger RNA involved in disorders related to pathophysiologic processes in venous thrombosis development.
