Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Pioglitazone in early Parkinson's disease: a phase 2, multicentre, double-blind, randomised trial.
A systematic assessment of potential disease-modifying compounds for Parkinson's disease concluded that pioglitazone could hold promise for the treatment of patients with this disease. We assessed the effect of pioglitazone on the progression of Parkinson's disease in a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, futility clinical trial. ⋯ National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Clinical Health Service Research on the Surgical Therapy of Acute Appendicitis: Comparison of Outcomes Based on 3 German Multicenter Quality Assurance Studies Over 21 Years.
The treatment of acute appendicitis has seen changes in diagnosis and therapy in Germany. The objective of this analysis was to assess changes in therapy and outcome after open appendectomy (OA) and laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) over the last 21 years. ⋯ Changes in patient data reflected demographic changes. Preoperative selection leads to 2 clearly defined groups. LA is the most dominant method of current operative therapy. The negative selection in OA group has influenced the worse outcome of that group.

The STOP-BANG questionnaire: reliability and validity of the Persian version in sleep clinic population.
The snoring, tiredness, observed apnea, blood pressure, body mass index, age, neck circumference, gender (STOP-BANG) is a concise and effective obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screening tool, part questionnaire (STOP), and part demographic or anthropometric measurements (BANG). The main purpose of this study was to translate this well-liked questionnaire into Persian and assess its reliability and validity in sleep clinic population. ⋯ Persian version of the STOP-BANG performs similar to its original version and is an easy-to-use questionnaire which could be considered as a reliable and valid tool for OSA screening.

Negative predictive value of transthoracic core needle biopsy: a multicenter study.
Specimens collected by CT scan-guided transthoracic core-needle biopsy (TTNB) are frequently used for the diagnosis of lung nodules, but the clinical value of negative results has not been sufficiently investigated. We sought to determine the negative predictive value (NPV) of TTNB specimens and investigate predictive factors of negative results. ⋯ One-half of all "negative" TTNB specimen results were falsely negative for malignant diagnosis. Findings in tissue collected from a second TTNB at the same target provided a final diagnosis in most cases without increasing complication rates.

A clinical prediction rule for meniscal tears in primary care: development and internal validation using a multicentre study.
In primary care, meniscal tears are difficult to detect. A quick and easy clinical prediction rule based on patient history and a single meniscal test may help physicians to identify high-risk patients for referral for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ⋯ The CPR improved the detection of meniscal tears in primary care. Further evaluation of the CPR in new primary care patients is needed, however, to assess its usefulness.
