In selected patients, detection of antibody-coated bacteria (ACB) in voided urine has correlated with upper urinary tract infection. From unselected patients, we studied 350 consecutive urine specimens submitted to the diagnostic laboratory with colony counts greater than or equal to 10(5)/ml. In 19% (55) among 288 specimens selected for final analysis ACB occurred. ⋯ The relationship of ACB to clinical syndromes was: asymptomatic bacteriuria, 15% (27/178); cystitis, 8% (6/75); acute hemorrhagic cystitis, 67% (4/6); prostatitis, 67% (2/3); and acute pyelonephritis, 62% (16/26). Among seven clinical findings, only structural abnormalities of the upper urinary tract correlated with the presence of ACB. Failure of fever and leukocytosis to correlate with ACB probably reflected the presence of other associated primary medical or surgical conditions.

Reduction of skin bacteria in theatre air with comfortable, non-woven disposable clothing for operating-theatre staff.
Conventional loose-weave cotton operating garments were compared with clothing of a non-woven fabric to test their efficacy in reducing the dispersal of skin bacteria into theatre air. When men wore operating suits made of the non-woven fabric dispersal of skin bacteria was reduced by 72%. When all the operating-theatre staff wore suits and dresses of this fabric air bacterial counts during operating sessions were reduced by 55%; no reduction occurred when the fabric was worn by only the scrubbed team. The lowest levels of microbial contamination of the air in the operating theatre occurred when both the unscrubbed and scrubbed theatre staff wore clothes of non-woven fabric.

The relative contribution of propionate, and long-chain even-numbered fatty acids to the production of long-chain odd-numbered fatty acids in rumen bacteria.
1. The relative contribution of propionate, and long-chain even-numbered fatty acids to the production of long-chain odd-numbered fatty acids in six pure cultures of rumen bacteria were studied, using single and double isotope procedures. 2. ⋯ The incorporation of propionate into odd-numbered fatty acids was markedly reduced in the presence of palmitate, or stearate. 5. The significance of the operation of alpha-oxidation is discussed in relation to the energy conservation in rumen bacteria.
