Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
A plaster containing DHEP and heparin for mild to moderate contusions and sprains with haematoma: a double-blind randomized study.
This prospective, randomized, double-blind, three-arm study was performed to investigate the efficacy of a medicated plaster containing the combination of diclofenac epolamine (DHEP) 180 mg and heparin 5600 IU in the treatment of unilateral blunt soft tissue injuries involving the upper or lower limb, complicated by severe local haematoma. ⋯ The plaster formulation combining DHEP and heparin relieves pain and induces faster dissolution of superficial haematomas, and may therefore contribute to a more rapid and complete recovery.

Multicenter StudyRetroperitoneal hematoma after percutaneous coronary intervention: prevalence, risk factors, management, outcomes, and predictors of mortality: a report from the BMC2 (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Cardiovascular Consortium) registry.
This study sought to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, outcomes, and predictors of mortality of retroperitoneal hematoma (RPH) following percutaneous coronary intervention. ⋯ Retroperitoneal hematoma is an uncommon complication of contemporary percutaneous coronary intervention associated with high morbidity and mortality. The identification of risk factors for the development of RPH could lead to modification of procedure strategies aimed toward reducing its incidence.

Significance of perihematomal edema in acute intracerebral hemorrhage: the INTERACT trial.
Uncertainty surrounds the effects of cerebral edema on outcomes in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). ⋯ The degree of, and growth in, perihematomal edema are strongly related to the size of the underlying hematoma of acute intracerebral hemorrhage, and do not appear to have a major independent effect in determining the outcome from this condition.

Multicenter StudyAntithrombotic therapy influences location, enlargement, and mortality from intracerebral hemorrhage. The Bleeding with Antithrombotic Therapy (BAT) Retrospective Study.
To determine whether the use of oral antithrombotic agents before the onset of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) affects hematoma features and early patient outcome. ⋯ Prior medication with antiplatelet agents, warfarin, or both was predictive of cerebellar hemorrhage, hematoma enlargement, and early death in Japanese ICH patients.

Detection and management of epidural haematomas related to anaesthesia in the UK: a national survey of current practice.
Epidural haematoma is a rare, but potentially disastrous complication of epidural analgesia. Favourable neurological outcome depends upon early recognition and surgical decompression; therefore, the management of epidural analgesia should include a systematic approach to recognition of the signs of epidural haematoma. ⋯ Improvements in monitoring have occurred over the last 5 yr, but observations of neurological function are not routine in all units, and are not continued after removal of the epidural catheter in the majority. The authors suggest that acute pain services should be responsible for protocols for the investigation and treatment of epidural haematomas.
