Multicenter StudyPatient-important upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the ICU: A mixed-methods study of patient and family perspectives.
The objective of this study was to create a definition of patient-important upper gastrointestinal bleeding during critical illness as an outcome for a randomized trial. ⋯ Survivors of critical illness and family members described patient-important upper gastrointestinal bleeding differently than current definitions of clinically-important upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyA randomised controlled trial of a nurse facilitator to promote communication for family members of critically ill patients.
Suboptimal communication with clinicians, fragmented care and failure to align with patients' preferences are determinants of post intensive care unit (ICU) burden in family members. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of a nurse facilitator on family psychological burden. ⋯ This study does not support the use of facilitators for family members of ICU patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyDeterminants of Subjective Mental and Functional Health of Critical Illness Survivors: Comparing Pre-ICU and Post-ICU Status.
To compare ICU survivors' subjective mental and functional health before ICU admission and after discharge and to assess determinants of subjective health decline or improvement. ⋯ The majority of ICU survivors did not experience substantial changes in their subjective health status, but patients with long ICU stays were prone to subjective mental and functional health decline. Hence, post-ICU care in post-ICU clinics could focus on these patients.

Epidemiology of intensive care patients classified as a third sex in Australia and New Zealand.
Patient sex affects treatment and outcomes in critical illness. Previous studies of sex differences in critical illness compared female and male patients. In this study, we describe the group of patients classified as a third sex admitted to ICUs in Australia and New Zealand. ⋯ Patients classified as third sex composed a small minority group of adult ICU patients. This group had a different diagnostic case mix but similar outcomes to the groups classified as female or male. Further characterizing a third sex group will require improved processes for recording sex and gender in health records.
