Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Sevoflurane preconditioning at 1 MAC only provides limited protection in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: a randomized bi-centre trial.
Volatile agents can mimic ischaemic preconditioning leading to a decrease in myocardial infarct size. The present study investigated if a 15 min sevoflurane administration before cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has a cardioprotective effect in patients undergoing coronary surgery. ⋯ This study did not show a significant preconditioning signal after 15 min of sevoflurane administration. The 15 min duration might be too short or the concentration of sevoflurane too low to induce cardioprotection detected by troponin I levels.

Pediatric anesthesia adverse events: the Thai Anesthesia Incidents Study (THAI Study) database of 25,098 cases.
The Thai Anesthesia Incidents Study (THAI Study) is the first national study of anesthesia outcomes during anesthesia practice in Thailand. The authors extracted data of 25,098 pediatric cases from THAI Study. ⋯ Infants are prone to higher adverse events compared with older children and adults. Main adverse events were respiratory-related and they occurred mostly during anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudySevoflurane provides earlier tracheal extubation and assessment of cognitive recovery than isoflurane in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
To determine whether sevoflurane, because of its lower blood/gas partition coefficient, compared with isoflurane as the primary anesthetic agent, allows earlier tracheal extubation and assessment of cognitive function after off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery. ⋯ Both sevoflurane and isoflurane may be safely used as maintenance agents in OPCAB. Sevoflurane has the advantage of allowing earlier extubation and evaluation of cognitive and neurologic function after OPCAB.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyThe influence of propofol versus sevoflurane anesthesia on outcome in 10,535 cardiac surgical procedures.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible cardioprotective effect of sevoflurane versus propofol anesthesia in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ Sevoflurane and propofol both possess some, although different, cardioprotective properties. Sevoflurane appears to be superior to propofol in patients with little or no ischemic heart disease, such as noncoronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and CABG surgery without severe preoperative ischemia, whereas propofol seems superior in patients with severe ischemia, cardiovascular instability, or in acute/urgent surgery.

The use of bispectral index monitoring in education - a tool to improve nurse-anaesthetists practice.
This paper is a report of a study to investigate whether monitoring depth of anaesthesia by bispectral index would reduce recovery time and consumption of anaesthetic drugs in anaesthetics performed by student nurse-anaesthetists. ⋯ It was not possible to demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in recovery time or consumption of anaesthetic drugs when using bispectral index monitoring during training of student nurse-anaesthetists.
