ReviewChinese herbal medicines in the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) critically impact on cancer patients' quality of life, causing various complications, and increasing the risk of chemotherapeutic failure. Current treatments addressing CINV are reasonably costly and have many side effects. Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) have been widely used in treating CINV in China. Clinical trials and modern experimental studies on CINV using CHMs are reviewed for clues that may help us to better prevent and treat CINV with CHMs, and develop safe and effective treatments. ⋯ CHMs seem effective in the prevention and treatment of CINV based on the clinical trials and some animal experiments, although the scientific validity of many clinical studies remain to be confirmed as many of them were inadequately designed. Further well designed clinical trials and more preclinical studies with reliable markers are required to confirm the usefulness of CHMs as complementary medicines for treating CINV and to use CHMs as rational prescriptions rather than based only on empirical knowledge.

The number of scientific studies about acupuncture has increased significantly during recent years. Acupuncture can be used as an evidence-based adjunct therapy for a variety of indications in professional football. ⋯ Besides knee, shoulder, spinal, elbow and postoperative pain, scientific meta-analyses also point towards the effectiveness of acupuncture in ankle sprains, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and nausea. Dry needling is an emerging option for treatment of myofascial trigger points and could potentially result in improved prevention of muscular injuries and enhancement of muscular performance.

Acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is the most common cause of poisoning and poisoning-related death in the United States. It manifests as broad spectrum of symptoms ranging from mild headache, nausea, and fatigue to dizziness, syncope, coma, seizures resulting in cardiovascular collapse, respiratory failure, and death. Cardiovascular complications of CO poisoning has been well reported and include myocardial stunning, left ventricular dysfunction, pulmonary edema, and arrhythmias. ⋯ Supplemental oxygen remains the cornerstone of therapy for CO poisoning. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases CO elimination and has been used with wide variability in patients with evidence of neurological and myocardial injury from CO poisoning, but its benefit in limiting or reversing cardiac injury is unknown. We present a comprehensive review of literature on cardiovascular manifestations of CO poisoning and propose a diagnostic algorithm for managing patients with CO poisoning.

The current antiemetic prophylaxis for patients treated with highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC) included the olanzapine-based triplet and neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists (NK-1RAs)-based triplet. However, which one shows better antiemetic effect remained unclear. ⋯ According to the results of this study, olanzapine-based triple antiemetic regimens were superior in both overall and delayed-phase nausea control when compared with various neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists-based triple regimens in patients with highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC). Olanzapine-based triplet was outstanding in terms of nausea control and drug price. For cancer patients with HEC, especially those suffering from delayed-phase nausea, olanzapine-based triple regimens should be an optional antiemetic choice.

The efficacy of dexamethasone reducing postoperative pain and emesis after total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is gradually emerging as the treatment of choice for end-stage osteoarthritis. In the past, Perioperative dexamethasone treatment is still a controversial subject in total knee arthroplasty. Therefore, we write this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of dexamethasone on pain and recovery after Total knee Arthroplasty. ⋯ Our meta-analysis demonstrated that dexamethasone decreased postoperative pain, the incidence of POVN, and total opioid consumption effectively which played a critical role in rapid recovery to TKA. However, we still need large sample size, high quality studies to explore the relationship between complications and dose response to give the final conclusion.
