The neuropsychological outcomes of concussion: a systematic review of meta-analyses on the cognitive sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury.
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), also known as concussion, has become a growing public health concern, prevalent in both athletic and military settings. Many researchers have examined post-mTBI neuropsychological outcomes, leading to multiple meta-analyses amalgamating individual study results. ⋯ Overall, meta-analytic review quality remained low with few studies assessing publication or study quality bias. Meta-analyses consistently identified adverse acute mTBI-related effects and fairly rapid symptom resolution. Future meta-analyses should better operationally define cognitive constructs to produce more consistent effect estimates across domains.

Acute traumatic coagulopathy in the setting of isolated traumatic brain injury: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) has been reported in the setting of isolated traumatic brain injury (iTBI) and associated with high mortality and poor outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the incidence and outcome of patients with ATC in the setting of iTBI. ⋯ ATC is commonly associated with iTBI and almost uniformly associated with worse outcomes. Any disorder of coagulation above the normal range appears to be associated with worse outcomes and therefore a clinically important target for management. Earlier identification of patients with ATC and iTBI, for recruitment into prospective trials, presents avenues for further research.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative StudyComparison of the safety and efficacy of propofol with midazolam for sedation of patients with severe traumatic brain injury: A meta-analysis.
To perform a meta-analysis to compare the safety and efficacy of propofol with midazolam for sedation of patients with severe traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Our meta-analysis of 4 studies showed that there are no important differences between propofol and midazolam when administered to provide sedation for patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Further randomized, controlled trials comparing propofol with midazolam for sedation of such patients are needed.

Review Meta AnalysisClinical Outcomes, Predictors, and Prevalence of Anterior Pituitary Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.
To assess the clinical outcomes, predictors, and prevalence of anterior pituitary disorders following traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Approximately one third of traumatic brain injury patients have persistent anterior pituitary disorder. Older age, traumatic brain injury severity, and skull fractures predict anterior pituitary disorders, which in turn may be associated with higher ICU mortality. Further high-quality studies are warranted to better define the burden of anterior pituitary disorders and to identify high-risk patients.

Review Meta AnalysisOlfactory dysfunction in pediatric traumatic brain injury: A systematic review.
The neuropsychological outcomes of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) have received increasing study over the past 20 years and are currently well delineated in the research literature. One outcome that has received little attention is that of olfactory dysfunction after pediatric TBI. This is despite literature indicating that anosmia and olfactory dysfunction are common after adult TBI and are likely to be linked to severity of injury, neuropathology, and executive dysfunction. ⋯ The studies found were limited by methodological weaknesses, variability in measures, small sample size, and difficulty of comparison across cohorts studied. Despite this, they reported consistent findings of anosmia and olfactory dysfunction in their TBI cohorts and identified a dose-response relationship between severity of injury and olfactory dysfunction. The results of the studies are discussed in terms of relevant findings, limitations, and areas requiring further exploration.
