Review Meta AnalysisAcupuncture for acute management and rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be life threatening depending on the severity of the insult to the brain. It can also cause a range of debilitating sequelae which require cognitive, motor, communication, emotional, or behavioral rehabilitation of varying intensity and duration. A number of studies conducted and published in China have suggested that acupuncture may be beneficial in the acute treatment and rehabilitation of TBI. ⋯ The low methodological quality of the included studies does not allow us to make conclusive judgments on the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in either the acute treatment and/or rehabilitation of TBI. Its beneficial role for these indications remains uncertain.Further research with high quality trials is required.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability. Progesterone is a potential neuroprotective drug to treat patients with TBI. ⋯ Current clinical evidence from three small RCTs indicates progesterone may improve the neurologic outcome of patients suffering TBI. This evidence is still insufficient and further multicentre randomised controlled trials are required.

Phenytoin versus Leviteracetam for seizure prophylaxis after brain injury - a meta analysis.
Current standard therapy for seizure prophylaxis in Neuro-surgical patients involves the use of Phenytoin (PHY). However, a new drug Levetiracetam (LEV) is emerging as an alternate treatment choice. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to compare these two drugs in patients with brain injury. ⋯ Levetiracetam and Phenytoin demonstrate equal efficacy in seizure prevention after brain injury. However, very few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the subject were found. Further evidence through a high quality RCT is highly recommended.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative StudyIntensive insulin therapy in brain injury: a meta-analysis.
Many studies have addressed the question of whether intensive insulin therapy (IIT) provides better outcomes for brain-injured patients than does conventional insulin therapy (CIT), with conflicting results. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to estimate the effect of IIT on patients with brain injury. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and citations of key articles and selected "all randomized controlled trials" (RCTs) comparing the effect of IIT to CIT among adult patients with acute brain injury (traumatic brain injury, stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and encephalitis). ⋯ IIT increased the rate of hypoglycemic episodes (RR=1.72, 95% CI=1.20, 2.46) however there was intractable heterogeneity present (I(2)=89%), which did not resolve upon sensitivity analysis. We found no evidence of publication bias by Egger's test (p=0.50). To conclude, IIT has no mortality or LTNO benefit to patients with brain injury, but is beneficial at decreasing infection rates.
