AbstractA classification of sport and recreation and an explanation of the term "severely" disabled are given, as well as the physical, psychological, social and work attributes of sport and the problems experienced by the disabled in these areas. The relevance and importance of occupational therapy in this field are briefly discussed and the article concludes with an introduction to the SA Sports Association for the physically disabled. A list of recognized competitive sports for the various groups and an address list for the use of medical practitioners and allied professions is given.
