AbstractEmergency admissions have rocketed in England since the four-hour A&E waiting target was introduced in 2004. More people may be going to A&E because they know they will be seen promptly. Better access may be increasing demand. Emergency admissions for long-term conditions are highestin Wales. In Northern Ireland the readmission rate is down.
