AbstractThis article provides a background to current practice in pre-operative assessment (POA) and outlines a POA lead nurse role that was successfully introduced in two acute hospital trusts. The education, training and assessment programme that was developed for POA nurses is also discussed. The aim of the programme was to offer an educational framework for nurses at different levels of practice in POA.
