    J. Matern. Fetal. Neonatal. Med. · Aug 2012 Empiric acyclovir for neonatal herpes simplex virus infection.Because neonatal herpes simplex virus (NHSV) infection is difficult to diagnose, there has been a move towards using more empiric acyclovir (ACV). ⋯ Clinicians in Alberta primarily consider the diagnosis of NHSV infection when confronted with a neonate with seizures, hemodynamic instability or suspicious skin lesions, but need to consider the diagnosis more often if all cases are to be treated at first presentation. They often perform incomplete investigations to rule out NHSV infection. Adverse events from ACV appear to be uncommon when the drug is used for suspected NHSV disease.

    J. Matern. Fetal. Neonatal. Med. · Aug 2012 Antibiotic prophylaxis for cesarean delivery: survey of maternal-fetal medicine physicians in the U.S.To describe practices concerning antibiotic prophylaxis for cesarean delivery among maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physicians in the United States. ⋯ The majority of MFM specialists in the US report routine and preoperative use of a single prophylactic dose of a 1st generation cephalosporin for cesarean delivery.

Due to the progress in fetal surgery, it is important to acquire data about fetal pain. ⋯ Most studies disclose the possibility of fetal pain in the third trimester of gestation. This evidence becomes weaker before this date, though we cannot exclude its increasing presence since the beginning of the second half of the gestation.

    J. Matern. Fetal. Neonatal. Med. · Aug 2012 First trimester vaginal bleeding and adverse pregnancy outcomes among Chinese women: from a large cohort study in China. To examine the effect of first trimester vaginal bleeding on adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm delivery, low birth weight and small for gestational age. ⋯ These results suggest that first trimester vaginal bleeding is an increased risk of low birth weight, preterm delivery and small for gestational age. Find ways to reduce the risk of vaginal bleeding and lower vaginal bleeding rate may be helpful to reduce the incidence of preterm birth, low birth weight and small for gestational age.

    J. Matern. Fetal. Neonatal. Med. · Aug 2012 Evaluation of biomarkers of oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity in the cord blood of preterm low birth weight neonates. The objective of the study is to investigate the association between oxidative stress markers and enzymatic / non-enzymatic antioxidants (marker of the resistance in body to oxidative damage) in the cord blood of preterm low birth weight (LBW) neonates. ⋯ Poor fetal growth affects the development of antioxidant defenses of preterm LBW babies, predisposing them to higher oxidative stress, which in turn may partly account for increased morbidity and mortality in these infants. The presence of an association between oxidative stress biomarkers and enzymatic /non-enzymatic antioxidants in the cord blood of preterm LBW neonates suggest that increased oxidative stress may be the result of changes in the levels of certain enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants due to the cause or the effect of oxidative damage occurring at the molecular level.
