ReviewThe metabolic syndrome in South Asians: epidemiology, determinants, and prevention.
The prevalence of obesity and the metabolic syndrome is rapidly increasing in India and other south Asian countries, leading to increased morbidity and mortality due to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). ⋯ Cardiometabolic risk is high in South Asians, starting at an early age. Increasing awareness of cluster of risk factors and how to prevent them should be emphasized in population-wide prevention strategies in South Asian countries, primarily focusing on children.

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy improves hypoadiponectinemia in severe obese men with obstructive sleep apnea without changes in insulin resistance.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with several conditions that could facilitate the onset of cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunctions. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has been shown to improve cardiovascular morbidity and mortality related to OSA, but the mechanisms underlying this association are not fully understood. ⋯ nCPAP therapy reverses hypoadiponectinemia levels present in obese men with OSA, probably through reductions in hypoxia and inflammation activity.
