Endocrine disruption (ED) and endocrine disruptors (EDs) emerged as scientific concepts in 1995, after numerous chemical pollutants were found to be responsible for reproductive dysfunction. The World Health Organization established in the United Nations Environment Programme a list of materials, plasticizers, pesticides, and various pollutants synthesized from petrochemistry that impact not only reproduction, but also hormonal functions, directly or indirectly. Cells communicate via either chemical or electrical signals transmitted within the endocrine or nervous systems. ⋯ It thus outlines a novel concept: EDs are also neurodisruptors (NDs) and can be collectively termed endocrine and nervous disruptors (ENDs). Most of ENDs are derived from petroleum residues, and their various mechanisms of action are similar to those of "spam" in electronic communications technologies. Therefore, ENDs can be considered as an instance of spam in a biological context.

The ingestion of toxic alcohols including methanol, ethylene glycol, and isopropanol remains a significant public health problem. These compounds can cause central nervous system depression and, for methanol and ethylene glycol, organ damage from toxic metabolites. The presence of these compounds in serum/plasma can often be determined and monitored by measuring the osmolal gap (OG). ⋯ Higher variability was seen for the data for isopropanol and acetone. For each of the data subsets, the estimated toxic alcohol concentration calculated using conversion factors from OG tends to overestimate the actual concentration of the compound. Overall, the present study demonstrates the generally linear relationship between OG determined by osmolality and the OG estimated using measured concentrations of acetone and toxic alcohols.

We have determined the effects of azure B (AzB), the main demethylated metabolite of methylene blue (MB), on a model of lethal cyanide intoxication. Our rationale was the following: AzB 1- possesses redox properties very similar to those of MB, which is a potent cyanide antidote, 2- may present a higher intracellular diffusibility than MB, 3- is already present in commercially available solutions of MB, and 4- appears very quickly in the blood after MB administration. AzB could therefore be a member of the phenothiazium chromophore family of interest to treat cyanide intoxication. ⋯ At the dose of 20 mg/kg, AzB was much less effective. At 4 mg/kg, the antidotal effects of AzB were significantly better than those produced by MB at the same dose and were not different from the effects produced by 20 mg/kg MB. We conclude that AzB is a potent cyanide antidote at relatively low doses.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-obesity activity and the action mechanism of Cissus quadrangularis extracts (CQR-300) in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Cissus quadrangularis was extracted with hot water, resulting in CQR-300. The anti-obesity activity of CQR-300 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes was examined by Oil-red O staining. ⋯ CQR-300 also down-regulated expression levels of adipogenesis/lipogenesis-associated proteins, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), and FAS. It's also up-regulated the expression level of phosphorylated-AMPK (p-AMPK). Collectively, these results suggested that CQR-300 might have an anti-obesity effect by its ability to decrease expression levels of adipogenesis/lipogenesis-related genes and proteins.

We present a 15-year-old female patient with an anaphylactic reaction to a jellyfish sting, sustained while surfing in the Mediterranean Sea. She experienced immediate difficulty in breathing, hoarseness and itching and was taken by ambulance to the emergency department, receiving intramuscular adrenaline on the way. ⋯ She was discharged 2 days later with allergy service follow up at our institution. This is the first case report documenting anaphylaxis due to Mediterranean jellyfish envenomation.
