Artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and telemedicine are deeply involved in our daily life and have also been extensively applied in the medical field, especially in ophthalmology. Clinical ophthalmologists are required to perform a vast array of image exams and analyze images containing complicated information, which allows them to diagnose the disease type and grade, make a decision on remedy, and predict treatment outcomes. ⋯ In spite of these issues, AI has indeed become an irresistible trend and is widely used by medical specialists in their daily routines in what we can call now, the era of AI. This review will encompass those issues and focus on recent research on the AI application in ophthalmology and telemedicine.

Ever since coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, it has had a devastating effect on the world through exponential case growth and death tolls in at least 146 countries. Rapid response and timely modifications in the emergency department (ED) for infection control are paramount to maintaining basic medical services and preventing the spread of COVID-19. This study presents the unique measure of combining a fever screening station (FSS) and graded approach to isolation and testing in a Taiwanese medical center. ⋯ Rapid response for infection control is a paramount in the ED to confront the COVID-19 outbreak. The FFS helped divide the flow of high- and intermediate-risk patients; it also decreased the ED workload during a surge of febrile patients. A graded approach to testing uses risk stratification to prevent nosocomial infection of asymptomatic patients. A graded approach to isolation enables efficient allocation of scarce medical resources according to risk stratification.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) represents the most frequent subtype of thyroid cancer (TC) with poor prognosis mainly due to the severe invasion and metastasis. As an oncogene, microRNA-421 (miR-421) is involved in the development of various cancers. This study was to investigate the clinical significance of miR-421 in PTC and its effects on the biological function of PTC cells. ⋯ miR-421 is a novel oncogene of PTC and is a valuable prognostic biomarker. Moreover, the upregulation of miR-421 enhances the proliferation, migration, and invasion of PTC cells.

The pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has spread across the world, causing causalities and inflicting chronic complications in those who survive the infection. Disruptions in the immune system and lowered physical levels caused by quarantine protocols are the major causes of chronic dysfunction and impaired life independency, especially in elderly patients. ⋯ Adequate education and coping strategies can lessen the potential infection complications and improve the quality of life. Acknowledging the possible benefits and risks of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug usage in chronic pain patients, and the supplementation of vitamin D may also aid in treating post-infected patients.

Acute heart failure (AHF) is a major and rapidly growing health problem responsible for millions of hospitalizations annually. Due to a high proportion of in-hospital mortality and postdischarge rehospitalization and mortality, a prompt strategy for risk stratification and subsequently tailored therapy is desirable to help improve clinical outcomes. The AHEAD (A: atrial fibrillation; H: hemoglobin; E: elderly; A: abnormal renal parameters; D: diabetes mellitus) and AHEAD-U (A: atrial fibrillation; H: hemoglobin; E: elderly; A: abnormal renal parameters; D: diabetes mellitus, U: uric acid) are popular prognostic scoring systems. However, only a specific follow-up period is considered in these systems, and whether their predictive capability is still accurate in a significantly shorter or longer follow-up period is not known. ⋯ The use of the HANBAH scoring system, which is a clinically friendly tool, was proposed, and its efficacy in predicting the mortality rates of patients with AHF regardless of the follow-up duration was independently validated.
