Pregnant and lactating women are vulnerable to iodine deficiency. This study was conducted to evaluate the iodine nutritional status of lactating women in northern Taiwan. ⋯ The results suggest that the iodine status in lactating women in northern Taiwan is adequate. However, iodine deficiency may continue to be present in certain subgroups, such as women of younger age and those who do not take multivitamins.

Few prognostic factors have been proposed for patients with locally advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study aimed to investigate the possible predictive factors for disease-free survival (DFS) after curative surgery for RCC stage T3 or higher. ⋯ In patients with locally advanced RCC, Fuhrman grade was associated with worse DFS after curative surgery. Urologists should closely monitor patients with high Fuhrman grades.

The purpose of our study is to identify novel preeclampsia (PE)-related methylation genes and uncover the molecular mechanism of PE. ⋯ Our study should be helpful for the development of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for PE.

Differences in intestinal microbiota profiling after upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery.
We aimed to investigate the long-term effects of metabolic profiles and microbiota status in patients after upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery and lower GI surgery and compared them with a control group. ⋯ Early gastric cancer patients who received total gastrectomy with RYEJ had a lower occurrence of MS than the controls, while early colorectal cancer patients who received RH were associated with a higher serum fasting glucose than the controls during long-term follow-up. In parallel with the metabolic differences, the P/B ratio was also significantly altered in patients after upper and lower GI surgery.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the pattern of leptin receptor gene polymorphism Gln223Arg in T2DM and to identify its association with the serum leptin and insulin levels as well as with insulin resistance in diabetes. ⋯ Leptin receptor gene polymorphism affected glucose metabolism by altering insulin resistance and pancreatic beta cells. Thus, single-nucleotide polymorphism of LEPR may affect the pathogenesis of T2DM.
