Autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation was first reported in 2007 to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and achieved encouraging effect, but whether similar outcome can be achieved in type 2 DM is not well demonstrated. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of combination of autologous bone marrow stem cell transplantation (BMT) and hyperbaric oxygen treatment on type 2 DM. ⋯ Combined therapy of intrapancreatic BMT and hyperbaric oxygen treatment can improve glucose control and reduce the dose of insulin and/or oral hypoglycemic drugs in type 2 DM patients, but it only improve pancreatic β-cell function transiently. Further randomized controlled clinical trials involved more patients will be required to confirm these findings and the mechanism needs to be illustrated deeply.

Genetic variability in adapter proteins with APPL1/2 is associated with the risk of coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese Han population.
Adaptor proteins containing PH domain, PTB domain, and leucine zipper motif 1 and 2 (APPL1/2) play a key role in cell proliferation in many tissues. APPL1 or APPL2 as an adaptor for adiponectin receptors mediates the signaling pathway of adiponectin which acts as an anti-atherosclerotic adipokine. This study aimed to investigate whether genetic variations in the APPL1/2 genes affect the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). ⋯ Genetic variation(s) in APPL1/2 may be associated with CAD risk in T2DM in Chinese population.

Effect of elevated total cholesterol level and hypertension on the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease: a cohort study of Chinese steelworkers.
Increased blood pressure and elevated total cholesterol (TC) level are the two most important modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the world. Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia co-exist more often than would be expected and whether there is a synergistic impact on fatal CVD between elevated TC and hypertension need to be further examined in Chinese population. ⋯ We found that the risk of fatal CVD was significantly associated with an additive interaction due to hypercholesterolemia and hypertension besides a conventional main effect derived from either of them, which highlights that the prevention and treatment of both risk factors might improve the individual risk profile thus reduce the CVD mortality.

Radiofrequency thermocoagulation rhizotomy for recurrent trigeminal neuralgia after microvascular decompression.
Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a well accepted surgical treatment strategy for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) with satisfying long-term outcome. However, considerable recurrent patients need more effective management. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of radiofrequency thermocoagulation rhizotomy (RTR) on patients with recurrent TN after MVD. ⋯ RTR was effective in alleviating the pain of TN cases suffering from unsuccessful MVD management. With the help of virtual reality imaging technique or neuronavigation system, the patients could attain better long-term pain relief.
