Review Historical ArticleAn abridged photographic history of organ transplantation.
Organ transplantation is one of the most remarkable therapeutic advances in modern medicine; it started as an experiment and has become a life-saving practice. We briefly describe the major milestones of this multidisciplinary clinical science, the challenges that it still faces, and we consider the crucial contribution that its example could set for other medical fields. ⋯ Methods successfully adopted by organ transplantation during the past 60 years can inspire promising fields, such as stem cell research, and provide useful tools to face the ethical challenges posed by scientific discoveries.

We sought to assess the incidence of invasive fungal infections and identify the risk factors and outcome of invasive fungal infections in liver transplant recipient. ⋯ Invasive fungal infections were associated with increased morbidity and mortality among liver transplant recipients, with Aspergillus spp. being the most common pathogen in our series. Because of its high mortality rate, it is important to follow up transplant patients for the development of invasive fungal infections.

Comparative StudyAnesthetic management in pediatric orthotopic liver transplant for fulminant hepatic failure and end-stage liver disease.
We assessed the anesthetic management and short-term morbidity and mortality in pediatrics patients who underwent an orthotopic liver transplant for fulminant hepatic failure or end-stage liver disease in a university hospital. ⋯ During pediatric orthotopic liver transplant, those children with fulminant hepatic failure require more intraoperative fluids and more frequent perioperative mechanical ventilation than those with end-stage liver disease.

Diagnosing hepatitis C virus and improved outcomes in overall and kidney graft survival among simultaneous liver-kidney transplant recipients in the post-MELD era.
We compared survival outcomes among simultaneous liver-kidney transplants after model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) according to their specific diagnosis and hepatitis C virus versus nonhepatitis C virus. ⋯ We demonstrated a statistically significant difference in overall and kidney graft survival between the post-MELD era and the pre-MELD era. Subgroup analyses of this group showed no statistically significant difference in overall and kidney-graft survival when compared with their specific diagnosis of hepatitis C virus. This must be further studied and verified in a larger cohort of patients to fully identify the effect of hepatitis C virus infection in this group of patients because it can affect both liver and kidney grafts after transplant.

Effect of graft size matching on pediatric living-donor liver transplantation in Japan.
The Japanese Liver Transplantation Society is a cooperative research consortium, established in 1980 to characterize and follow trends in patient and graft survival in all liver transplants in Japan. This study evaluated the effect of graft size matching on survival in pediatric recipients of living donor liver transplant. ⋯ Living-donor liver transplant had greater survival in children than adult recipients. Graft-to-recipient body weight ratio was a significant prognostic factor in recipients aged < 1 year.
