Pneumonia after kidney transplant: incidence, risk factors, and mortality.
Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in recipients of solid-organ transplant. We aimed to determine risk factors for development of pneumonia and associated deaths in kidney transplant recipients. ⋯ Recipients of kidney transplant may be at risk for pneumonia and associated death. Nosocomial pulmonary infections may be associated with marked morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant recipients.

Case ReportsCase report of skull metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma after a liver transplant.
A solitary skull metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma is rare. A 38-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma presented to our institution with a palpable temporal scalp mass. ⋯ A skull metastasis owing to hepatocellular carcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with a subcutaneous scalp mass. Although a distant metastasis can affect the prognosis of the patient, early treatment may improve survival.

The effects of compound danshen dripping pills and human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cell transplant after acute myocardial infarction.
The low frequency of survival of stem cells implanted in the myocardium after acute myocardial infarction may be caused by inflammation and oxidative stress in the myocardial microenvironment. We evaluated the effects of a traditional Chinese medicine, Compound Danshen Dripping Pills, on the cardiac microenvironment and cardiac function when used alone or in combination with human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cell transplant after acute myocardial infarction. ⋯ Combination therapy with Compound Danshen Dripping Pills and human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells may improve cardiac function and morphology after acute myocardial infarction.

Review Historical ArticleAn abridged photographic history of organ transplantation.
Organ transplantation is one of the most remarkable therapeutic advances in modern medicine; it started as an experiment and has become a life-saving practice. We briefly describe the major milestones of this multidisciplinary clinical science, the challenges that it still faces, and we consider the crucial contribution that its example could set for other medical fields. ⋯ Methods successfully adopted by organ transplantation during the past 60 years can inspire promising fields, such as stem cell research, and provide useful tools to face the ethical challenges posed by scientific discoveries.

We sought to assess the incidence of invasive fungal infections and identify the risk factors and outcome of invasive fungal infections in liver transplant recipient. ⋯ Invasive fungal infections were associated with increased morbidity and mortality among liver transplant recipients, with Aspergillus spp. being the most common pathogen in our series. Because of its high mortality rate, it is important to follow up transplant patients for the development of invasive fungal infections.
