Comparative StudyAnesthetic management in pediatric orthotopic liver transplant for fulminant hepatic failure and end-stage liver disease.
We assessed the anesthetic management and short-term morbidity and mortality in pediatrics patients who underwent an orthotopic liver transplant for fulminant hepatic failure or end-stage liver disease in a university hospital. ⋯ During pediatric orthotopic liver transplant, those children with fulminant hepatic failure require more intraoperative fluids and more frequent perioperative mechanical ventilation than those with end-stage liver disease.

Diagnosing hepatitis C virus and improved outcomes in overall and kidney graft survival among simultaneous liver-kidney transplant recipients in the post-MELD era.
We compared survival outcomes among simultaneous liver-kidney transplants after model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) according to their specific diagnosis and hepatitis C virus versus nonhepatitis C virus. ⋯ We demonstrated a statistically significant difference in overall and kidney graft survival between the post-MELD era and the pre-MELD era. Subgroup analyses of this group showed no statistically significant difference in overall and kidney-graft survival when compared with their specific diagnosis of hepatitis C virus. This must be further studied and verified in a larger cohort of patients to fully identify the effect of hepatitis C virus infection in this group of patients because it can affect both liver and kidney grafts after transplant.

Effect of graft size matching on pediatric living-donor liver transplantation in Japan.
The Japanese Liver Transplantation Society is a cooperative research consortium, established in 1980 to characterize and follow trends in patient and graft survival in all liver transplants in Japan. This study evaluated the effect of graft size matching on survival in pediatric recipients of living donor liver transplant. ⋯ Living-donor liver transplant had greater survival in children than adult recipients. Graft-to-recipient body weight ratio was a significant prognostic factor in recipients aged < 1 year.

Comparative StudyComparison of creatinine clearance estimates with routine measured clearance in adult Jordanians with a kidney transplant.
There are conflicting data on using the Cockroft-Gault formula and the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula to assess graft function in kidney transplants. This study uses a cohort of Jordanian kidney transplant patients to assess performance of the Cockroft-Gault formula and the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equations by using the criterion standard of measured creatinine clearance. ⋯ In Jordanian patients with a renal transplant, although the Cockcroft-Gault formula performed slightly better than the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation in estimating creatinine clearance, neither of these equations can accurately predict renal graft function.

Effect of repeat Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy on pediatric live-donor liver graft for biliary atresia.
Treatment for patients with biliary atresia is a Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy; however, the efficacy of repeat Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy is unclear. This study sought to examine the effect of a prior Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy, especially a repeat Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy, on the outcomes of living-donor liver transplant. ⋯ Repeat Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy might have a negative effect on patients who undergo living-donor liver transplant for biliary atresia patients with potential lethal complications such as bowel perforation. More biliary atresia patients could have a liver transplant, with improved survival and better life expectancy, if they have inadequate biliary drainage after the initial Kasai hepatic portoenterostomy.
