Multicenter StudyUse of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step-1 Score as a Screening Tool for Orthopaedic Surgery Away Rotations.
Orthopaedic surgery has become an increasingly competitive specialty for medical students applying to residency. Aside from residency interviews, away rotations are one of the only opportunities for residency programs to qualitatively evaluate an applicant. The purpose of this study was to determine if residency program directors (PDs) use a minimum United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step-1 score as a screening tool for students applying for away rotations at their institution. ⋯ A substantial proportion of orthopaedic surgery residency PDs use the USMLE Step-1 score as a screening tool for students interested in doing away rotations at their programs. If a student's Step-1 score does not meet the program's minimum, the majority of programs still will allow the student to rotate at their institution. Students should take this information into account when selecting away rotations in order to maximize their chances of matching into an orthopaedic surgery program.

Multicenter StudyResearch-Track Residency Programs in Orthopaedic Surgery: A Survey of Program Directors and Recent Graduates.
The importance of research in resident education has been emphasized in the orthopaedic surgery community, and a number of residency programs have incorporated a year or more of protected research time into their training. However, limited information exists as to what programs are looking for in applicants to research-track residency programs or the perceived benefits of completing such a program. ⋯ The majority of program directors preferred that applicants to their research-track program have an interest in academics, although most did not consider it a failure if their research-track residents entered nonacademic careers. Graduates of research-track residency programs who entered academics more frequently viewed the completion of a research track as being beneficial compared with those who went into private practice.

Multicenter StudySurgical Treatment of Localized-Type Tenosynovial Giant Cell Tumors of Large Joints: A Study Based on a Multicenter-Pooled Database of 31 International Sarcoma Centers.
Localized-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) is a rare, neoplastic disease with only limited data supporting treatment protocols. We describe treatment protocols and evaluate their oncological outcome, complications, and functional results in a large multicenter cohort of patients. A secondary study aim was to identify factors associated with local recurrence after surgical treatment. ⋯ Therapeutic Level III. Multicenter Study Clinical TrialFragility Fractures of the Pelvis Classification: A Multicenter Assessment of the Intra-Rater and Inter-Rater Reliabilities and Percentage of Agreement.
The fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) classification was established to address the specific fracture morphology and dynamic instability in the elderly. Although this system is frequently used, data on the intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities are lacking. ⋯ With moderate to substantial intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities, the FFP classification forms a solid basis for future clinical investigations. The differentiation of FFP II from FFP III should be evaluated thoroughly, as the initial treatment changes from nonoperative for II to operative for III.

Multicenter StudyImplant Fracture Analysis of the TFNA Proximal Femoral Nail.
Mechanical failure of intramedullary nails is rare. This investigation was prompted by a series of cases of observed breakage of the recently introduced TFNA Proximal Femoral Nailing System (TFN [Trochanteric Fixation Nail]-Advanced; DePuy Synthes) in our region. Laboratory analysis and case data are presented, in contribution to post-market surveillance. ⋯ Therapeutic Level IV. See Instructions for Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence.
