For nearly the past two decades, cytokines (CKs) have been the only systemic treatment option available for advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). In recent years, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have demonstrated clinical activity on this tumour. Our purpose is to describe one centre's experience with the use of CKs and TKIs in the treatment of patients with advanced RCC. ⋯ Our results are in line with the activity and survival rates previously reported in the literature regarding the use of TKIs for patients with advanced RCC in first- and second-line treatment, which has demonstrated an acceptable toxicity level.

Axillary lymphadenectomy is nowadays not recommended to treat ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but there is controversy surrounding the indication for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). ⋯ Performing SLNB avoids an unnecessary second surgery to study axillary lymph nodes in invasive carcinoma diagnosed after definitive histological study. In patients undergoing a mastectomy, this study requires an axillary lymphadenectomy that is not useful in up to 50% of cases. We think that in a selected group of patients with DCIS, SLNB improves tumour staging, adapts the treatment and avoids second surgery in this group of patients.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a relatively frequent situation in the natural history of colorectal cancer and is associated with a dismal prognosis. Promising results have been shown after radical cytoreduction followed by intraperitoneal chemohyperthermic perfusion. The aim our study was to assess the outcomes after treating patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of colonic origin by means of cytoreductive surgery and intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) followed by early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC). ⋯ Cytoreductive surgery combined with HIPEC is a feasible technique that might increase patient survival. It represents a potential cure for selected patients who have no other alternatives.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIN) is a common toxicity of anticancer treatment and its incidence is growing. It significantly affects quality of life and is a dose-limiting factor that interferes with treatment. ⋯ There are promising strategies that could help reduce the burden of this complication. This review will suggest an approach to the diagnosis of these disorders and provide an update on new therapies.
