Multicenter StudyGastrostomy tube placement among infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome undergoing stage 1 palliation.
Different feeding strategies have been suggested to improve growth and survival of infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome following stage 1 palliation. The study objective was to assess hospital mortality following stage 1 palliation among infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who had two feeding modalities, gastrostomy tube vs no gastrostomy tube. ⋯ The gastrostomy procedure did not place infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome at higher risk of mortality. These infants should be considered for gastrostomy tube placement if they had persistent difficulty in oral feeding following stage 1 palliation.

Multicenter StudyFeasibility of Using Electronic Medical Record Data for Tracking Quality Indicators in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease.
In order to determine the feasibility of tracking quality of care in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD), we aimed to estimate the availability of relevant data in electronic medical records (EMR) used in North American ACHD centers. ⋯ For a wide range of ACHD programs, data for proposed QIs based on administrative data are most likely to be obtainable through EMR. Data related to imaging interpretation or overuse measures are least likely. Our findings can inform future efforts to establish registry efforts or data reporting tools to track these indicators.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyGrowth Restriction in Infants and Young Children with Congenital Heart Disease.
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of growth restriction in infants and young children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and investigate the relationship between poor growth, feeding difficulties, cardiac classification, and nutrition intervention on outcomes. ⋯ Growth restriction remains an ongoing problem in children with CHD. Faltering growth preadmission and lower growth parameters were associated with an increased hospital length of stay. Nutritional screening from diagnosis may detect growth faltering, improve access to early nutrition intervention, and improve patient outcomes.

Multicenter StudyIdentifying predictors of hospital readmission following congenital heart surgery through analysis of a multiinstitutional administrative Database.
Despite resource burdens associated with hospital readmission, there remains little multiinstitutional data available to identify children at risk for readmission following congenital heart surgery. ⋯ Readmissions following congenital heart surgery are common and associated with significant resource consumption. While we describe independent predictors that may identify patients at risk for readmission prior to hospital discharge, there likely remains other unreported factors that may contribute to readmission following congenital heart surgery.

Multicenter StudyVariation in postoperative care following stage I palliation for single-ventricle patients: a report from the Joint Council on Congenital Heart Disease National Quality Improvement Collaborative.
The National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPC-QIC) has established a national data registry for patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and its variants undergoing staged palliation. The goal of this collaborative is to better understand current care practices and to improve outcomes in children with these severe and complex forms of congenital heart disease. In this study, we describe the postoperative intensive care course, and its variations, for the first 100 patients enrolled into the registry. ⋯ Considerable variation exists in the postoperative course and management of univentricular patients following stage I palliation. Variation in length of intensive care unit stay, inotropic agent use, need for reoperation or cardiac catheterization, and postoperative complications are described. Further studies to determine etiologies for observed variation may result in improved standards of care and better outcomes during the interstage period.
