Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAutonomic Function in Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis and Acupuncture - an Experimental Pilot Study within a Randomized Trial.
Acupuncture was shown to reduce symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). The present study investigated (a) whether autonomic function would differ in SAR patients and healthy controls, and (b) whether acupuncture treatment would evoke changes in autonomic function compared to sham acupuncture. ⋯ SAR patients showed alterations in autonomic function, which had partially normalized after treatment. However, in this sample we found no specific effect of acupuncture compared to sham acupuncture.

Randomized Controlled TrialStress management and mind-body medicine: a randomized controlled longitudinal evaluation of students' health and effects of a behavioral group intervention at a middle-size German university (SM-MESH).
Student life can be stressful. Hence, we started a regular mind-body medical stress management program in 2006. By today, more than 500 students took part and evaluations showed significant results, especially with regard to a reduction of stress warning signals. For further analysis, we now decided to run a randomized controlled longitudinal trial. ⋯ The effectiveness of an MBMSR program in a group of supposedly healthy students could be demonstrated. Findings suggest that stress management might be given importance at universities that care for the performance, the quality of life, and stress-health status of their students, acknowledging and accounting for the challenging circumstances of university life, as well as the specific needs of the modern student population.

Randomized Controlled TrialEar acupressure for smoking cessation: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.
Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disease worldwide but smokers often fail to quit due to nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Current available pharmaceutical therapies may assist with smoking cessation but may have side effects. Ear acupressure (EAP) and ear acupuncture have been used for smoking cessation, and some positive results have been reported. The aim of the study is to assess the efficacy and safety of EAP in assisting individuals to quit smoking and/or support them in the management of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. ⋯ Findings from this study will determine if this EAP intervention alone can be an effective and safe therapy to assist with smoking cessation and the management of nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Review Randomized Controlled TrialTopical herbal medicine for treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.
Topical Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is generally used in China, separately or in combination with conventional medicine, to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Clinical studies have shown beneficial effects of CHM compared with conventional medicine. ⋯ Due to weak evidence, the claimed benefits of topical CHM for DPN are inconclusive; more stringent studies are needed to support clinical practice.

Randomized Controlled TrialRandomized controlled trial of pulsating cupping (pneumatic pulsation therapy) for chronic neck pain.
Pneumatic pulsation therapy may combine the effects of cupping therapy and massage. This study investigated the effect of pneumatic pulsation therapy on chronic neck pain compared to standard medical care. ⋯ Pneumatic pulsation therapy appears to be a safe and effective method to relieve pain and to improve function and quality of life in patients with chronic neck pain.
