Review Comparative Study[The assessment of pain intensity using one-dimensional scales].
The assessment of pain intensity is mandatory in many medical disciplines. However, several pitfalls are associated with this task, as, for example, the selection of an instrument which is suitable for different groups of patients; the reliable and valid interpretation of the results, etc. Thus, the aim of the present review is to summarise the recent literature on this topic and to provide a selection of suitable instruments to assess pain intensity in different groups of patients. ⋯ The selection of appropriate pain measurement scales is mandatory for achieving valid results.

[Evaluation of family doctor centred medical care based on AOK routine data in Baden-Württemberg].
The agreement on family-doctor centred care (Hausarztzentrierte Versorgung, "HzV") pursuant to Sect. 73b, Volume V of the German Social Security Code became effective in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, on July 1(st), 2008. This complex intervention, which is voluntary for both family doctors and patients, aims to strengthen the coordinative function of family practices. As a result, this intervention is believed to increase the quality of medical health care for persons insured - in the medium to long-term - and thereby, ideally, to additionally save expenses. ⋯ Moreover, a decrease of encounters to specialists with and without referrals from family doctors could be observed (-29.8 % and -12.5%, respectively). Interestingly, even costs of pharmacotherapy, polypharmacy and prescriptions of Me-Too drugs were statistically significantly lower or less frequent, respectively, in the group of HzV insured persons. In conclusion, besides the observed associations in terms of pharmacotherapy, the HzV intervention appears to have advantageous effects in terms of family doctor centred health care.

Comparative Study[The therapy of masticatory muscle pain with oral splints].
Myofascial masticatory muscle pain is the second most frequent pain-related complaint in the orofacial region. Like unspecific musculoskeletal pain in other body segments, masticatory muscle pain is characterised by a multifactorial aetiology. ⋯ In chronic myofascial jaw pain associated with psychosocial impairment in patients, effectiveness of splint therapy is limited, though. Within an interdisciplinary pain management programme, additional involvement of a psychotherapist is essential.

[Development of a decision aid on post mortem organ donation - somewhere between evidence uncertainty, fears, and ethical and moral values].
The recently revised German transplantation law provides that people are to be supported to make informed decisions on post-mortem organ donation by implementing broad education campaigns. A comprehensive web-based decision aid "organ donation after death" was developed, evaluated and optimised utilising multiple methodological phases. The decision aid comprises 1) factual information in a question-answer format, 2) tools for the individual assessment of this information, and 3) narratives addressing attitudes and emotional aspects. ⋯ Potential users also participated in the usability evaluation. Version 1.0 was made publicly available on the Internet in April 2012. Currently, version 2.0 of the decision aid is being updated step-by-step, based on the results of the evaluation.
