Metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) from (18)F-FDG PET/CT are emerging prognostic biomarkers in various human cancers. This study examined the prognostic value of these metabolic tumor parameters measured by pretreatment (18)F-FDG PET/CT in patients with salivary gland carcinomas. ⋯ Pretreatment values of MTV and TLG are independent prognostic factors in patients with intermediate or high-grade salivary gland carcinomas.

Ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) SPECT has been reported to improve the diagnostic performance of V/Q imaging for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE). However, only sparse data based on an objective reference test are available, and the criteria used for interpretation have varied widely. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the performance of V/Q SPECT using various criteria for interpretation, in comparison with a validated independent diagnostic strategy. ⋯ For V/Q SPECT interpretation, a diagnostic cutoff of 1 segmental or 2 subsegmental mismatches seems best for confirming or excluding acute PE.

Comparison of EORTC criteria and PERCIST for PET/CT response evaluation of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with irinotecan and cetuximab.
The study aim was to compare European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) criteria with PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors (PERCIST) for response evaluation of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with a combination of the chemotherapeutic drug irinotecan and the monoclonal antibody cetuximab. ⋯ Response evaluation with EORTC criteria and PERCIST gave similar responses and OS outcomes with good agreement on BOmR (κ-coefficient, 0.76) and similar significant differences in median OS between response groups. Compared with EORTC criteria, we find PERCIST unambiguous because of clear definitions and therefore more straightforward to use.

The role of 18F-FDG PET/CT for initial staging of nasal type natural killer/T-cell lymphoma: a comparison with conventional staging methods.
The utility of (18)F-FDG PET/CT in patients with nasal-type natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma has not been established. Therefore, we evaluated the role of (18)F-FDG PET/CT for determining cancer staging by comparing its results to those of conventional staging methods (CSMs) (physical examination, CT with intravenous contrast, biopsies from primary sites, and bone marrow examinations) in patients with nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma. ⋯ Our study demonstrated that (18)F-FDG PET/CT scanning is a valuable modality for staging and treatment planning in patients with nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma.

We evaluated the potential of (18)F-FDG PET/CT and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to monitor the histologic response in patients with extremity osteosarcoma receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy, using sequential PET/CT and MR imaging. ⋯ In the current preliminary study, both PET/CT and DWI are useful for predicting histologic response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in osteosarcoma. Combining PET/CT and DWI may be an effective method to predict the histologic response of patients to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
