Skeletal muscle ischaemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) can be a life threatening condition. It is relevant to various aspects of the management of trauma and surgical patients. Currently there lacks a pharmacological agent that can be used to dampen the effects of IRI. Riluzole has been shown to reduce the effects of IRI on various organ systems, but there have yet to be any studies on the effects in IRI of skeletal muscle. Our aim was to investigate the effects of Riluzole on IRI in the skeletal muscle of pigs. ⋯ Our findings suggest that Riluzole can potentially reduce the effects of IRI on skeletal muscle. This is potentially due to the ability of Riluzole to block sodium channels, decreasing action potentials and therefore glutamate release. It also acts to decrease intracellular calcium levels, which prevents apoptosis. Riluzole is a promising drug for the prevention of IRI in skeletal muscle, but further research is required.

The use of hexapod circular external fixation in acute tibia fracture care is increasing as more general orthopaedic surgeons are gaining expertise with the use of this treatment modality. Limited data is currently available on the complications that may be encountered with this treatment strategy.

The purpose of this study is to report the results of open reduction internal fixation of patella fractures (OTA 34 A-C) using cannulated lag screws and FiberWire® (Arthrex, Naples, FL, USA) with regard to union and symptomatic implant removal. ⋯ Patella fractures can be treated with cannulated lag screws and FiberWire® with a high rate of primary union (96%) and a low rate of symptomatic implant removal (8%). The implant removal rate compares favorably with alternative constructs, with an equivalent rate of fracture union.

Bladder rupture following blunt pelvic trauma is rare though can have significant sequelae. We sought to determine whether machine learning could help predict the presence of bladder injury using certain factors at the time of presentation of blunt pelvic trauma. ⋯ Machine learning algorithms can be used to help predict with a high level of accuracy the presence of bladder rupture with blunt pelvic trauma using readily available information at the time of presentation. This has the potential to improve selection of patients for additional imaging, while also more appropriately allocating hospital resources and reducing patient risks.

The introduction of shared electric scooters (e-scooters) to New Zealand has resulted in a large number of injuries. Within the past year, there have been studies addressing some of the impact of these e-scooter injuries, but none have included outpatient data or total regional costs. ⋯ The overall burden of care due to the introduction of e-scooters to New Zealand has had significant impact both on the primary urban trauma center as well as community care facilities. E-scooter related injuries have had a large impact on regional healthcare costs.
