Critical Care Posters IISESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: Our aim was to describe an easy-to-use and pragmatic index based on clinical variables that reliably predicts the need for mechanical ventilation (MV) in patients treated with high flow nasal cannula (HFNC). ⋯ Oriol Roca: Other: Supported in part by Ventilung,(r) (National Course of Mechanical Ventilation). Our Critical Care Department has received research funding from Fisher & Paykel not related with the present study. The company did not take part in the design of the study, the interpretation of the results or the abstract preparation. Pulmonary Function TestingSESSION TYPE: Slide PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 04:15 PM - 05:15 PMPURPOSE: In typical restriction, there is a proportionate reduction in the TLC and in the FVC (TLC %pred-FVC %pred < 5%). In some patients there is a disproportionate reduction in the FVC as compared to the TLC (TLC %pred-FVC %pred ≥5%) along with an increase in the residual volume. We call this pattern 'complex restriction' (CR). This study aims to better understand the clinical and pulmonary function profile of patients with CR as compared to typical restriction. ⋯ The following authors have nothing to disclose: Brittany Dykstra, Vivek Iyer, Kenneth Parker, Robert Hyatt, Paul ScanlonNo Product/Research Disclosure Information.

Asthma PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: Despite optimal treatment, some asthmatic remain symptomatic with frequent exacerbations and persistent obstruction of the airways. Tiotropium addition is associated with reduced risk of exacerbations and sustained bronchodilatation(BD). Objectives: Characterization of asthmatic patients with optimized treatment and treated with tiotropium. Assess the role of tiotropium in symptomatic control and lung function. ⋯ The following authors have nothing to disclose: Ana Gonçalves, Ricardo Lima, Ivone Pascoal, João Moura, Miguel Guimarães, Raquel Duarte, Aurora CarvalhoNo Product/Research Disclosure Information.

COPD Epidemiology & Physiology PostersSESSION TYPE: Poster PresentationsPRESENTED ON: Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMPURPOSE: European respiratory society (ERS) guidelines recommend to stratify patients with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) according to the presence or not of risk factors(RF) for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). There is controversy regarding the need to empirically cover PA in clinical practice. Therefore a better understanding of the prevalence and RF for PA in hospitalized patients with AECOPD is critical in order to appropriately adhere to clinical practice guidelines. Aim: 1) Determine the prevalence of PA pathogens and PA risk RF in hospitalized patients with AECOPD; and 2) Assess the association of PA isolation and PA RF among hospitalized patients with AECOPD. ⋯ The following authors have nothing to disclose: Pedro Marcos, Pilar Sanjuan, Santiago Rodriguez-Segade, Natalia Uribe-Giraldo, Marina Blanco-Aparicio, Isabel Otero, Jorge Ricoy, Hector Verea, Marcos RestrepoNo Product/Research Disclosure Information.
