Vitamin D and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
The results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating supplemental vitamin D on aminotransferases and cardio-metabolic risk factors in subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have been inconsistent. The present study aimed to quantitatively evaluate whether supplementation with vitamin D has beneficial effects in treatment of NAFLD. A systematical literature search was performed with Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus databases and Web of Science up to June 2020. ⋯ However, the pooled effect did not support that supplemental vitamin D was beneficial for concentrations of AST, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C. The present study provides substantial evidence that supplemental vitamin D has favorable effects on glycemic control and insulin sensitivity in NAFLD patients. Vitamin D could be as an adjuvant pharmacotherapy of NAFLD.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the individual nutritional status on the salivary concentration of N-acylethanolamines (NAEs), including linoleoylethanolamide (LEA), oleoylethanolamide (OEA), and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and their precursors N-acylphosphatidylethanolamines (NAPEs) upon mastication of biscuits containing different fats. Three types of biscuits were formulated with 10% extra-virgin olive oil (EVOB), 10% palm oil (PALMB) or 10% paraffin oil (0% lipids, CONB). Twenty-five healthy subjects, 12 normal weight (NW, 9 F, 30.4 ± 8.7 years) and 13 obese (OB, 8 F, 35.5 ± 10.7 years) participated in a randomized crossover study. ⋯ Biscuit mastication increased salivary NAPEs and all NAEs, but PEA. Altogether, the data suggested that NAPEs and NAEs were released in saliva from biscuits at levels influenced by the individual nutritional status and biscuit type. These findings may have implications in molecular mechanisms underpinning gustatory processes in humans.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study to assess bacterial anti-adhesive activity in human urine following consumption of a cranberry supplement.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the common bacterial infections treated with antibiotics. The North American cranberry is recommended for prophylaxis in women with recurrent UTIs as a nutritional alternative. The ability of cranberry components and their metabolites to inhibit adhesion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an important mechanism by which cranberry mitigates UTIs. ⋯ Urinary anti-adhesion activity against P-type E. coli after consumption of the cranberry chew was significantly greater (p < 0.05) than that observed with placebo chew at all time points except 24-36 h. Ex vivo anti-adhesion effects on type 1 E. coli were greater (p < 0.05) after cranberry chew consumption than placebo chew at 3-6 and 6-9 h urine collections. In conclusion, consumption of cranberry +health™ cranberry supplement exhibited greater ex vivo urinary anti-adhesion activity compared to placebo, suggesting that it may have the potential to help promote urinary tract health.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis is a recognized contributing factor to many noncommunicable diseases, but more evidence is still needed to illustrate its causative impact on mental and brain health disorders and mechanism(s) for targeted mitigation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used in the management of neuropsychiatric diseases for many years in China. In this study, a randomized, controlled trial was conducted to examine the impact of stress on gut microbiota dysbiosis and depression, and TCM in alleviating the damage using Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS) rats, a well-established rodent model for depression. ⋯ Finally, the fecal microbiome of CUMS rats was characterized by alterations in amino acid metabolism and evaluation of bile acid biosynthesis, and TCM-treated rats showed elevation of cysteine and methionine metabolism. Overall, these results indicated that administration of the TCM may mitigate CUMS-induced depression-behaviors, and it is correlated with reversing CUMS-induced intestinal microbiota dysbiosis; evidence also supported related changes in brain metabolites. These findings set up the foundation to further reveal the exact causal relationship among the TCM formula, host responses, gut microbiota dysbiosis and the levels of brain metabolites, and enabled scientific interpretation of the therapeutic function of the TCM.

The major bioactive ingredient THSG of Polygonum multiflorum is well established for its anti-oxidation, anti-aging and anti-inflammation properties. Increasing evidence supports the capacity of THSG to ameliorate the biochemistry of neurotrophins and their downstream signaling axis in mouse models to attenuate neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In this study, the neuroprotective effects of THSG were studied in vitro and in vivo. ⋯ In the MPTP-induced mouse models of Parkinson's disease, THSG ameliorated the animal behaviors against MPTP-induced neurotoxicity, which was demonstrated by the pole test and the tail suspension test. Biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis verified the THSG-mediated restoration of the FGF2-Akt and BDNF-TrkB signaling axis in the substantia nigra and corpus striatum and the recovery of dopaminergic neurons. These results establish the neuroprotective effects of THSG in vitro and in vivo and unravel the underlying mechanism against toxin-induced neural atrophy, providing a new avenue for the use and pharmacological research of edible medicine for anti-neurodegenerative diseases.
