Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyTotal intravenous anesthesia vs inhaled anesthetic for intraoperative visualization during endoscopic sinus surgery: a double blind randomized controlled trial.
Bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) can impair visualization and delay surgical progress. The role that anesthetic technique may have on the quality of surgical field during ESS has been previously studied. However, meta-analyses have deemed the current literature inconclusive and lacking methodological consistency. This study was designed with these critiques in mind to assess the effect of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) vs inhaled anesthetic on the quality of the surgical field during ESS. ⋯ Even with all other factors implemented to optimize the surgical field, utilization of TIVA vs inhaled anesthetic still resulted in a statistically significant improvement in surgical field during ESS.

Multicenter StudyImpact of postoperative endoscopy upon clinical outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery.
After endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), endoscopy is used to gauge surgical success and clinical outcomes. Prior studies have not examined this topic prospectively using validated outcome metrics across multiple institutions. ⋯ Postoperative endoscopy correlates with SNOT-22 and medication usage in CRS patients. Polyp patients who achieve near perfect endoscopy have similar symptoms to healthy controls; however, nonpolyp patients with near perfect endoscopy still have rhinologic and extranasal symptoms that are worse than healthy controls.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyMometasone furoate nasal spray in the treatment of nasal polyposis in Chinese patients: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Although mometasone furoate nasal spray (MFNS) has demonstrated efficacy in nasal polyposis (NP) in Western populations, data in Asian populations is limited. ⋯ This study demonstrated that MFNS was effective and well tolerated in this population of adult, Chinese patients with NP.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialInvestigation of change in cardinal symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis after surgical or ongoing medical management.
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has been defined as inflammation of the paranasal sinuses lasting at least 12 weeks with corresponding 2 or more "cardinal symptoms" that include: (1) nasal obstruction; (2) thick nasal discharge; (3) facial pain/pressure; and (4) reduction or loss of sense of smell. Although prior studies have investigated symptoms of CRS after sinus surgery, none have compared the outcomes of these specific symptoms to ongoing medical therapy. ⋯ Across a large population, surgical management is more effective at resolving the cardinal symptoms of CRS than ongoing medical management with the exception of sense of smell/taste.
