Meta AnalysisThe liver injury and gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with Coronavirus Disease 19: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Since December 2019, novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)-infected pneumonia (COVID-19) occurred in Wuhan, and rapidly spread throughout China. Our study aimed to evaluate the association of liver injury and gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS) with the progression of COVID-19. ⋯ The incidences of GIS in patients with COVID-19 is relatively low and are not associated with the COVID-19 progression. Gastroenterologists should pay more attention to the liver injury induced by SARS-CoV-2 during the course of infection.

Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of acetylcysteine in "non-acetaminophen" acute liver failure: A meta-analysis of prospective clinical trials.
Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare but highly mortal condition without liver transplantation (LT). N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a glutathione precursor that detoxifies the reactive metabolite of acetaminophen and replenishes hepatic glutathione stores, is a highly effective drug for the prevention of ALF caused by acetaminophen. However, therapeutic use of NAC in non-acetaminophen-induced ALF (NAI-ALF) including alcohol intoxication, hepatitis virus infection, or drug and toxin-related hepatotoxicity is still inconclusive. The aim of this article is using meta-analysis method to analyze recent prospective clinical trials for the safety and efficacy of NAC in patients with ALF not caused by acetaminophen poisoning. ⋯ NAC is safe for NAI-ALF. It can prolong patients' survival with native liver without transplantation and survival after transplantation, but it cannot improve the overall survival.

Review Meta AnalysisInterleukin-23 receptor genetic polymorphisms and ulcerative colitis susceptibility: A meta-analysis.
The interleukin-23 receptor (IL-23R) polymorphism has been implicated in susceptibility to ulcerative colitis (UC), but the results remain inconclusive. This study was designed to evaluate whether IL-23R polymorphisms were associated with UC susceptibility. ⋯ Our meta-analysis supports that two polymorphisms (rs11209026 and rs7517847) in the IL-23 gene may be considered to be protective factors against developing UC among Caucasian populations; while the rs11209032 polymorphisms may increase the risk of UC among Caucasian populations; furthermore, the rs1088967 polymorphisms in the IL-23 gene may be considered to be protective factors against developing UC among Asian populations. Further large case-control studies especially concerning ethnicity differences and genotype-phenotype interaction should be performed to clarify possible roles of IL-23R in UC.

Meta AnalysisUse of pro-/synbiotics as prophylaxis in patients undergoing colorectal resection for cancer: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
To estimate the efficacy of pro-/synbiotics treatment in patients undergoing colorectal resection, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted. ⋯ Based on the meta-analysis, perioperatively use pro-/synbiotics as prophylaxis in patients undergoing colorectal resection improved clinical outcomes. The best preventive strategy (including species and the optimal dose) of pro-/synbiotics should be considered in future meta-analyses.
