Multicenter StudyPrognosis in moderate and severe traumatic brain injury: external validation of the IMPACT models and the role of extracranial injuries.
Several prognostic models to predict outcome in traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been developed, but few are externally validated. We aimed to validate the International Mission on Prognosis and Analysis of Clinical Trials in TBI (IMPACT) prognostic models in a recent unselected patient cohort and to assess the additional prognostic value of extracranial injury. ⋯ Epidemiologic/prognostic study.

Multicenter StudyHigh-volume trauma centers have better outcomes treating traumatic brain injury.
Survival and discharge status from severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients treated during the past 11 years in seven state-designated Level I trauma centers was analyzed to test for a relationship between patient volume and outcome. ⋯ Epidemiologic study, level III.

Multicenter StudyDefining when to initiate massive transfusion: a validation study of individual massive transfusion triggers in PROMMTT patients.
Early predictors of massive transfusion (MT) would prevent undertriage of patients likely to require MT. This study validates triggers using the Prospective Observational Multicenter Major Trauma Transfusion (PROMMTT) study. ⋯ Diagnostic, level II.

Multicenter StudyCharacterization of acute coagulopathy and sexual dimorphism after injury: females and coagulopathy just do not mix.
Acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) predicts poor outcome after injury. Females have been demonstrated to be hypercoagulable early in the posttrauma period. It remains unclear whether presence of ATC alters sex-based outcomes after injury. This study's objective was to characterize the sex dimorphism after severe injury in the presence and absence of ATC. ⋯ Prognostic study, level II.
