Comparison of the intubation conditions provided by rapacuronium (ORG 9487) or succinylcholine in humans during anesthesia with fentanyl and propofol.
Currently, the only approved muscle relaxant with a rapid onset and short duration of action is succinylcholine, a drug with some undesirable effects. Rapacuronium is an investigational nondepolarizing relaxant that also has a rapid onset and short duration and consequently should be compared with succinylcholine in its ability to facilitate rapid tracheal intubation. ⋯ A 1.5-mg/kg dose of rapacuronium effectively facilitates rapid tracheal intubation. It can be considered a valid alternative to 1.0 mg/kg succinylcholine for this purpose.

Perflubron emulsion delays blood transfusions in orthopedic surgery. European Perflubron Emulsion Study Group.
Fluorocarbon emulsions have been proposed as temporary artificial oxygen carriers. The aim of the present study is to compare the effectiveness of perflubron emulsion with the effectiveness of autologous blood or colloid infusion for reversal of physiologic transfusion triggers. ⋯ Perflubron emulsion (1.8 g/kg) combined with 100% oxygen ventilation is more effective than autologous blood or colloid infusion in reversing physiologic transfusion triggers.

Effect of mivazerol on perioperative cardiac complications during non-cardiac surgery in patients with coronary heart disease: the European Mivazerol Trial (EMIT).
Mivazerol is a drug with alpha2-agonist properties that reduces post-ganglionic noradrenaline availability and spinal efferent sympathetic output. ⋯ The alpha2-adrenergic agonist, mivazerol, did not alter the rates of myocardial infarction or cardiac death in patients with known coronary heart disease undergoing noncardiac surgery. However, it may have protected patients undergoing vascular surgery from further coronary events, and a specific study of such patients is now indicated.

Intramuscular rocuronium in infants and children: a multicenter study to evaluate tracheal intubating conditions, onset, and duration of action.
This multicenter, assessor-blinded, randomized study was done to confirm and extend a pilot study showing that intramuscular rocuronium can provide adequate tracheal intubating conditions in infants (2.5 min) and children (3 min) during halothane anesthesia. ⋯ Intramuscular rocuronium, in the doses and conditions tested, does not consistently provide satisfactory tracheal intubating conditions in infants and children and is not an adequate alternative to intramuscular succinylcholine when rapid intubation is necessary.

A new noninvasive method to measure blood pressure: results of a multicenter trial.
Blood pressure (BP) monitoring with arterial waveform display requires an arterial cannula. We evaluated a new noninvasive device, Vasotrac (Medwave, Arden Hills, MN) that provides BP measurements approximately every 12-15 beats and displays pulse rate and a calibrated arterial waveform for each BP measurement. ⋯ In surgical and critically ill patients, the Vasotrac measured BP, pulse rate, and displayed radial artery waveform, which was similar to direct radial arterial measurements. It should be a suitable device to measure BP frequently in a noninvasive fashion.
