Lipid-modifying efficacy and tolerability of anacetrapib added to ongoing statin therapy in Japanese patients with dyslipidemia.
We aimed to assess the effects of cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor anacetrapib added to statin ± other lipid-modifying therapies (LMT) in Japanese patients with dyslipidemia who were not at their LDL-C goal. ⋯ Long-term treatment with anacetrapib 100 mg substantially reduced LDL-C, increased HDL-C and was well tolerated in Japanese patients with dyslipidemia (ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT01760460).

Icosapent ethyl (eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester): Effects on remnant-like particle cholesterol from the MARINE and ANCHOR studies.
Remnant-like particle cholesterol (RLP-C) is atherogenic and may increase atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk. Icosapent ethyl is a high-purity prescription eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester (approved as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride [TG] levels in adult patients with TGs ≥500 mg/dL [≥5.65 mmol/L] at 4 g/day). In the MARINE and ANCHOR studies, icosapent ethyl reduced TG and other atherogenic lipid parameter levels without increasing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. This exploratory analysis evaluated the effects of icosapent ethyl on calculated and directly measured RLP-C. ⋯ Icosapent ethyl 4 g/day significantly reduced calculated and directly measured RLP-C levels versus placebo in patients with elevated TG levels from the MARINE and ANCHOR studies.

Efficacy and safety of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor anacetrapib in Japanese patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study assessed the lipid-modifying efficacy/safety profile of anacetrapib 100 mg added to ongoing statin ± other lipid-modifying therapies (LMT) in Japanese patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). ⋯ In Japanese patients with HeFH, treatment with anacetrapib 100 mg for 12 weeks resulted in substantial reductions in LDL-C and increases in HDL-C and was well tolerated. Improvement in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease severity is associated with a reduction in carotid intima-media thickness progression.
n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) treatment may decrease liver fat in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but uncertainty exists whether this treatment also decreases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in NAFLD. We tested whether 15-18 months n-3 PUFA [docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid] (Omacor/Lovaza, 4 g/day) vs placebo decreased carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) progression, a surrogate marker of CVD risk. We also evaluated if improvement in markers of NAFLD severity was associated with decreased CIMT progression over time. ⋯ Improvement in two markers of NAFLD severity is independently associated with reduced CIMT progression.

Supplementation with two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus curvatus HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum KY1032, reduces fasting triglycerides and enhances apolipoprotein A-V levels in non-diabetic subjects with hypertriglyceridemia.
Previous studies have indicated that supplementation with probiotics might improve lipid metabolism. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with probiotic strains Lactobacillus curvatus (L. curvatus) HY7601 and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) KY1032 on triglyceride (TG) and apolipoprotein A-V (apo A-V) levels. ⋯ The consumption of two probiotic strains for 12 weeks reduced TGs and increased the apo A-V and LDL particle size in hypertriglyceridemic subjects. This effect was more pronounced in subjects with higher levels of fasting TGs regardless of their APOA5 -1131T > C genotype.
