Practice Guideline[Austrian Guidelines for Prophylaxis of Venous Thromboembolism].
Venous thromboembolism occurs in a significant number of patients in typical risk situations (e.g. surgery or trauma). However, in these special high-risk situations anticoagulants, particularly low molecular weight heparin, allow for a decrease in the number of venous thromboses, pulmonary embolisms and deaths caused by pulmonary embolism. Only the wide-spread and adequate use of antithrombotics can safeguard against venous thromboembolism in these various risk situations. ⋯ The recommendations for the management of thrombosis prophylaxis in the fields of general surgery, orthopaedic and trauma surgery and internal medicine have been elaborated drawing on the Guidelines issued by the American College of Chest Physicians. Included are recommendations on indications as well as the choice of antithrombotics, dose and duration of therapy for the various conditions. The Austrian Guidelines for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis are meant to be a basis for standardising procedures in the above-mentioned fields, thus contributing to an improved management of risk situations by physicians and health care staff and providing more safety for patients.

Oxidative stress in patients with COPD and pulmonary hypertension.
Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Oxidant/antioxidant imbalance has also been reported in various forms of pulmonary hypertension. The present study aimed to assess systemic oxidative stress, as reflected by serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and activities of antioxidant enzymes in erythrocytes [glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)] in patients with and without pulmonary hypertension secondary to COPD. ⋯ The study demonstrates the presence of oxidative/antioxidative imbalance in the systemic circulation in patients with COPD: compared with healthy subjects, COPD patients had higher serum MDA concentrations and lower GPX activity in erythrocytes. The magnitudes of the increase in MDA and reduction in GPX activity were similar in COPD patients with pulmonary hypertension and in those with normal pulmonary artery pressures.

In vitro interaction of dihydroartemisin and lumefantrine in clinical field isolates from Bangladesh.
The combination of artemether and lumefantrine was introduced in 2005 as the official first line therapy for uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Bangladesh. Fresh P. falciparum samples from patients with acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria who presented to the field site at the Bandarban Sadar Hospital in Bangladesh were tested in checkerboard in vitro drug sensitivity assays to assess the interaction between dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and lumefantrine (LUM). ⋯ The optimal combination ratio of the drug combination indicated by the lowest mean FIC average was found to be 1:150 DHA:LUM. Although activity correlations between DHA and lumefantrine were significant, indicating possible cross sensitivity patterns, our data confirm that artemether-lumefantrine is a highly synergistic drug combination.

Incidence of complications in intrahospital transport of critically ill patients--experience in an Austrian university hospital.
During the past decade, considerable changes and advances have been made in intrahospital transport of critically ill patients. Despite the fact that intrahospital transport is nowadays regarded an extension of the intensive care continuum, it still poses a risk for the patient. ⋯ We conclude that advances in the management of intrahospital transport of critically ill patients have led to an overall decrease of complications. However, an undeniable risk remains, especially in relation to disease severity and the urgency of such transports.

Development of a pharmacodynamic screening model with Entamoeba histolytica.
Human amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics, but also occurring in neighbouring parts of the temperate zones. Invasive amoebiasis causes dysentery and, by haematogenous spread, also extra-intestinal hepatic, pulmonary or cerebral abscesses, not rarely fatal conditions. The available anti-amoebic drugs have shortcomings regarding tolerability and efficacy. ⋯ After adapting the system to the use of 96-well (8 x 12) tissue culture plates, sensitivity tests were carried out with metronidazole, dehydroemetine and dihydroartemisinin as active control drugs, and seven extracts from Stemona tuberosa, Aglaia edulis, Aglaia elaeagnoidea and Aglaia odorata. Stem bark extract from Aglaia elaeagnoidea was the most active material with an IC(99) of 496 ng/ml and a slope S of 1.1325, followed by leaf extract from Stemona tuberosa with an IC(99) of 638 ng/ml and a slope S of 1.5648. All seven extracts showed full activity at concentrations <4000 ng/ml and qualified for further investigation.
