Review Meta AnalysisSystematic review with meta-analysis: branched-chain amino acid supplementation in liver disease.
Dietary supplementation with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) is often used in cirrhotic patients to improve nutritional status. We wanted to explore the evidence for BCAA supplementation in chronic liver disease. ⋯ Prophylactic BCAA supplementation appears safe and might improve survival in cirrhotic patients.

Infectious mononucleosis is associated with an increased incidence of NAFLD.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. Although various genetic and lifestyle-related risk factors have been identified, its pathophysiology has not yet been fully unravelled. While acute EBV infection in the setting of infectious mononucleosis can lead to acute hepatitis, the long-term hepatic sequelae of infectious mononucleosis are still poorly understood. ⋯ Infectious mononucleosis is significantly associated with the incidence of NAFLD in a large cohort from Germany. These findings suggest a pathophysiological involvement of EBV in the development of NAFLD and could stimulate research efforts to better understand the pathophysiology of this emerging global medical burden.

Meta AnalysisAssociation between homocysteine and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: Mendelian randomisation study.
Many observational studies explore the relationship between homocysteine (Hcy) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), whereas the causality of this association remains uncertain, especially in European populations. We performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomisation study to elucidate the causal association between Hcy and NAFLD. Furthermore, we explored the relationship of Hcy with liver enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). ⋯ This study has clinical implications as it indicates that increased Hcy concentrations increase the relevant liver enzymes and may play a role in NAFLD risk in European populations.

Clinical usefulness of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in Alzheimer Disease.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex disease that shares clinical features with other dementias. It is important to establish a specific and reliable diagnosis. Nowadays, AD diagnosis is based on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. However, the corresponding cut-offs differ amongst studies. This study aims to evaluate the CSF biomarkers in the AD differential diagnosis. ⋯ The ratio Aβ42/Aβ40 showed the highest discriminating capacity between AD and non-AD patients and might be useful in clinical practice. Regarding NfL, it is not a specific biomarker for AD; however, it might be helpful for the differential diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. Nevertheless, further analysis in an external cohort is required in order to validate these results.
