Review Meta AnalysisMultifaceted Role of Galectin-4 In Cancer: A Systematic Review.
Galectins are β-galactoside-binding proteins. Galectin-4 has shown an effect on cancer progression/metastasis, especially in cancers of the digestive system. This can be attributed to altered glycosylation pattern of cell membrane molecules, which is a characteristic attribute of oncogenesis. The aim of this paper is to systematically review galectin-4 in different cancers and its role in disease progression. ⋯ A differential expression of galectin-4 was observed in different cancer stages/ and types. Furthermore, galectin-4 was found to modulate disease progression. A meta-analysis and comprehensive mechanistic studies, pertaining to different aspects of galectin-4 biology, could give statistically driven correlations, elucidating multifaceted role of galectin-4 in cancer.

Multicenter StudyAge-differences of patients treated with wearable cardioverter defibrillator: data from a multicenter Registry.
Wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCD) are used as a 'bridging' technology in patients, who are temporarily at high risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD). Several factors should be taken into consideration, for example patient selection, compliance and optimal drug treatment, when WCD is prescribed. We aimed to present real-world data from seven centres from Germany and Switzerland according to age differences regarding the outcome, prognosis, WCD data and compliance. ⋯ Although the compliance rate in different age groups is high, the average wear hours tended to be lower in young patients compared to older patients. The clinical events were similar in younger patients compared to older patients.

Assessing cardiorespiratory fitness relative to sex improves surgical risk stratification.
To what extent sex-related differences in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) impact postoperative patient mortality and corresponding implications for surgical risk stratification remains to be established. ⋯ Low CRF accounted for more deaths than traditional CVD risk factors, and when CRF was considered relative to sex, the disproportionate number of females stratified unfit was corrected. These findings support clinical consideration of 'sex-specific' CRF thresholds to better inform postoperative mortality and improve surgical risk stratification.

Performance of two-dimensional shear wave elastography and transient elastography compared to liver biopsy for staging of liver fibrosis.
Staging of liver fibrosis traditionally relied on liver histology; however, transient elastography (TE) and more recently two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) evolved to noninvasive alternatives. Hence, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE assessed by the Canon Aplio i800 ultrasound system using liver biopsy as reference and compared the performance to TE. ⋯ Performance of 2D-SWE was good to excellent and well comparable with TE, supporting the application of this 2D-SWE system in the diagnostic workup of chronic liver disease.

ALKBH1 contributes to renal cell carcinoma progression by reducing N6-methyladenine of GPR137.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 4% of all adult malignancies with high mortality worldwide. Although conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment has been applied for RCC in clinic, the mortality rate of patients is increasing each year, and patients with metastatic RCC are still suffering from poor prognosis. Thus, further investigation of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the development and progression of RCC is of particular importance. ⋯ Our results indicate that ALKBH1-GPR137 axis might be used as a potential therapeutic target in RCC, contributing to finding new prognostic biomarkers for RCC at an early stage.
