Doege-Potter syndrome: A review of the literature including a new case report.
We reviewed 76 published cases of Doege-Potter syndrome, and non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) secondary to a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) between 1989 and 2016, to study disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this rare paraneoplastic disease. Further, we report 1 new case of a patient presenting with Doege-Potter syndrome. ⋯ Glucocorticoids dose-dependently reduce the frequency and severity of hypoglycemic episodes. Low doses of prednisone were ineffective at relieving hypoglycemia. The effect of neoadjuvant treatment, consisting of chemoradiation, and consecutive selective embolization of vessels feeding the tumor were not identified.

Statins intake and risk of liver cancer: A dose-response meta analysis of prospective cohort studies.
Previous studies have indicated that statins intake was associated with liver cancer risk, but presented controversial results. Studies in PubMed and EMBASE were searched update to February 2017 to identify and quantify the potential dose-response association between statins intake and liver cancer. Six eligible studies involving a total of 11,8961 participants with 9530 incident cases were included in this meta-analysis. ⋯ Subgroups analysis indicated that statins intake was associated with a significantly risk of liver cancer risk reduction in Asia (OR = 0.44, 95%CI: 0.11-0.77, P <.001) and Caucasian (OR = 0.49, 95%CI: 0.36-0.61, P <.001). Subgroup meta-analyses in study design, study quality, number of participants, and number of cases showed consistency with the primary findings. Additional statins intake is associated with liver cancer risk reduction.

Fabry disease is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by an α-galactosidase A deficiency. The progressive accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (GL-3) results in life-threatening complications, including renal, cardiac, and cerebrovascular diseases. This study investigated the phenotypic and molecular spectra of GLA mutations in Korean patients with Fabry disease using a nationwide survey. ⋯ Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) was performed in all the males and pediatric patients, whereas 75% of the symptomatic females underwent ERT for 4.2 ± 3.6 years. This study described the demographic data, wide clinical spectrum of phenotypes, and GLA mutation spectrum of Fabry disease in Korea. Most of the patients had classical Fabry disease, with a 4 times higher incidence than that of late-onset Fabry disease, indicating an underdiagnosis of mild, late-onset Fabry disease.

A comparative study to evaluate the efficacy of EGF, FGF-2, and 0.3% (w/v) ofloxacin drops on eardrum regeneration.
Traumatic tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs) tend to spontaneous healing, however, large TMPs usually fail to healing. Clinical and experimental studies had demonstrated that growth factors accelerated the healing of large TMPs. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of growth factors and 0.3% (w/v) ofloxacin drops n the healing of human large TMPs. ⋯ Epidermal growth factor, FGF-2, and 0.3% (w/v) ofloxacin drops accelerated the closure of large TMPs compared with conservative treatment. Surprisingly, neither the closure rate nor closure time differed significantly among the 3 treated groups. Further experimental studies to demonstrate whether 0.3% (w/v) ofloxacin per se accelerates the healing of TMPs will be interesting in the future.

Comparison of free-hand fluoroscopic guidance and electromagnetic navigation in distal locking of femoral intramedullary nails.
Although the method has been used widely, one of the greatest challenges for intramedullary nailing is to position the distal locking screw. A new technology, the electromagnetic navigation system, is a radiation-free way to locate the position of the drill bit and provide 3-dimensional real-time feedback of location and orientation of the drill bit relative to the locking holes. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the reliability and efficiency of the free-hand technique compared to the new electromagnetic navigation system. ⋯ Under the premise of achieving the same effect, the electromagnetic navigation system has the advantage of less distal locking time and less radiation dose.
