Effect of acupuncture on hormone level in patients with gastrointestinal dysfunction after general anesthesia: A study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (PGD) refers to one of the common postoperative complications. Acupuncture can facilitate the recovery of PGD, whereas no therapeutic schedule of acupuncture has been internationally recognized for treating PGD. In the present study, a scientific trial protocol has been proposed to verify the feasibility of acupuncture in treating gastrointestinal dysfunction after laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. We conduct this protocol to investigate whether acupuncture recovery gastrointestinal dysfunction by influencing the expression of gastrointestinal hormone. ⋯ A standardized and scientific clinical trial is conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for gastrointestinal dysfunction after laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. The aim is to objectively evidence and improves the clinical practice of acupoint prescription, as an attempt to promote the clinical application of this technology.

The efficacy of jade moxibustion in knee osteoarthritis.
This study aims to compare clinical effect between Jade moxibustion and traditional moxibustion, and to determine the clinical effect of Jade moxibustion on knee osteoarthritis (KOA). ⋯ This randomized controlled trial used traditional moxibustion as a control group to provide rigorous evidence for the clinical efficacy and safety of Jade moxibustion in treatment of KOA.

The relationship between various categories of blood pressure (BP), subtypes of hypertension, and development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have not been extensively studied. Therefore, our study aimed to explore this relationship in a random population sample of men born in 1943, living in Sweden and followed over a 21-year period. Participants were examined for the first time in 1993 (age 50 years), where data on medical history, concomitant diseases, and general health were collected. ⋯ Furthermore, those with high-normal BP, ISH-IDH, and SDH had a higher risk of CVD than those with optimal-normal BP. The adjusted relative risk of CVD was highest for SDH (hazard ratio [HR] 1.95; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.37-2.79), followed by ISH-IDH (HR 1.34; 95% CI 0.93-1.95) and high-normal BP (HR 1.31; 95% CI 0.91-1.89). Over a 21-year follow-up, the participants with high-normal BP or ISH-IDH had a higher relative risk of CVD than those with optimal-normal BP.

Based on the International Society for peritoneal dialysis (PD) recommendations, blockade of renin-angiotensin systems with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) improves residual kidney function in PD patients. However, the long-term effectiveness of ACEI/ARB use in PD patients has not been fully elucidated. We, therefore, intend to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the effects of ACEI/ARB use on long-term mortality, cardiovascular outcomes, and adverse events among PD patients. ⋯ Based on the existing published data, an ethical approval is not required. The findings will be disseminated through scientific meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals.PROSPERO registration number: CRD42019129492.

Carotid intima media thickness in older children and adolescents with HIV taking antiretroviral therapy.
Increased carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is reported in both adults and children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in high income settings and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but data from sub-Saharan Africa is lacking. We assessed cIMT using ultrasound in perinatally HIV-infected children aged 6 to 16 years taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) for ≥6 months compared with HIV-uninfected controls in Harare, Zimbabwe. Groups were compared using unpaired t test and potential predictors of cIMT were assessed using multiple linear regression. ⋯ There was no association between cluster of differentiation 4 count, HIV viral load, and duration on ART and cIMT. Children with HIV taking ART have similar cIMT to uninfected children. Increasing numbers of children with HIV are reaching adulthood and longitudinal studies to assess the effect of long-term HIV and ART on vascular changes are required.
