Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has the potential to promote adaptive immunity. We sought to examine the synergistic effect of BCG-CWS vaccination on cervical cancer patients undergoing standard treatments including surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. We retrospectively analyzed 103 patients (13 cases administered with BCG-CWS vaccine and 90 controls without BCG-CWS) who underwent a standard treatment for cervical cancer from 2005 to 2021. ⋯ BCG-CWS therapy appears to be an effective immune adjuvant therapy for cervical cancer, although randomized control studies are needed to confirm this. We also need to clarify the underlying mechanisms slowing the progression of cervical cancer in those receiving this vaccination. This study sheds light on the potential of immunostimulatory drugs such as BCG-CWS and suggests the important role of immunity for cancer elimination in combination therapy.

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a relatively rare disease. While the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test remains as one of the commonly used diagnostic test for AI, to date there is no consensus on the cortisol cutoff value post-ACTH stimulation test. This study aimed to investigate and characterize the cortisol response after the standard ACTH stimulation test in a group of Saudi Arabian patients. ⋯ Patients with AI present with mostly nonspecific symptoms, with type 1 diabetes as the most common comorbidity. The cortisol level cutoffs obtained from Arab patients who underwent ACTH stimulation tests showed wide variability for its utility in AI diagnosis. Further studies to evaluate the optimal cortisol cutoff values for AI diagnosis in this population are needed.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone tumor of mesenchymal origin. Tripterygii Wilfordii (TW) is a traditional Chinese medicine widely used for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Various components of TW have been shown to have antitumor effects, however, no systematic study has been conducted to prove the anti-OS effects of TW. ⋯ Network pharmacology and molecular docking suggest that TW affects the biological behavior of OS through multiple pathways involving multiple targets, such as proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and infiltration. Upregulation of the cellular tumor antigen p53 (TP53) gene and downregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1-alpha/beta (STAT1) genes can prolong the survival time of patients with OS. Triptolide, kaempferol, and 5,8-Dihydroxy-7-(4-hydroxy-5 methyl-coumarin-3)-coumarin have a relatively high potential to become a treatment for patients with OS and improve 5-year survival of OS patients.

It is difficult to follow changes in the intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucomatous eyes comprehensively because of the limited number of outpatient examinations. We report our findings in a case of normal tension glaucoma (NTG) in which frequent self-measurements of the IOP were used to evaluate the IOP-lowering effect of different medications. ⋯ We conclude that frequent self-measurements of the IOP can determine that small changes of the IOPs are significant.

Insufficient lymph node harvest (< 12) may lead to incorrect classification of stage I and II disease. Many studies have indicated a poor prognosis with inadequate lymph node harvest in stages I to III, but few studies have demonstrated the relationship between low lymph node harvest and T4 disease. This study aimed to identify the influence of insufficient number of lymph nodes harvested on survival in T4N0 colorectal cancer. ⋯ There were no significant differences in recurrence rate, emergent or elective surgery, laparoscopic or open surgery, or chemotherapy between the 2 groups. Kaplan-Meier analyses showed no statistical differences in 5-year disease-free survival (P = .886) and 5-year overall survival (P = .832) between the groups. There were no significant differences in disease-free survival and overall survival between patients with adequate (≥ 12) and inadequate (< 12) lymph node harvest in T4N0 colorectal cancers.
