Physical activity is important for positive health outcomes, and wearable activity devices are useful for tracking physical activity patterns and energy expenditure. This study investigated differences in, and correlations of, duration of physical activity according to activity intensity and energy expenditure among community-dwelling older adults with different levels of frailty. This cross-sectional study enrolled 88 adults older than 65 years from communities between June 2019 and January 2020. ⋯ Correlation analysis showed that frailty was significantly associated with decreased light to very active physical activity and energy expenditure, as well as increased sedentary behavior (P < .05). This study provides evidence of differences in objectively measured physical activity and energy expenditure between frail and non-frail older adults, and reveals an association of frailty with physical activity and energy expenditure. Daily physical activity that exceeds low-intensity, low-energy expenditure activity should be encouraged among older adults with frailty.

Xanthii fructus (XF) is the dried and mature fruit of Xanthium sibiricum Patr. It has the effects of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-arthritic. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory disorder and often leads to disability. ⋯ Western Blotting experiment showed that the extract of XF could reduce the expression levels of NF-κB p65 and β-catenin. The extract of XF has a significant therapeutic effect on RA in vitro by regulating NF-κB signaling pathway and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Our research will help to clarify the potential pharmacological mechanism of XF on RA and provide experimental basis for the application of XF in clinical treatment.

Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is an RNA-binding protein that regulates several posttranscriptional events and is closely related to the development of multiple tumors. However, little is known about PTBP1. Thus, we carried out a systematic pan-cancer analysis to explore the relationship between PTBP1 and cancer. ⋯ These results provide clues to better understand PTBP1 from the perspective of bioinformatics and highlight its importance in various human cancers.

Atelectasis is the most occurring postoperative complication after cardiac surgeries. Postoperative respiratory exercises and incentive spirometry led to decrease in postoperative complications, especially atelectasis and hospital stay. The objectives of the study were to evaluate postoperative complications and length of hospital stay of patients who received pre and postoperative nurse-guided incentive spirometry against those of patients who received pre and postoperative breathing exercises by the physiotherapist in patients who underwent cardiac surgery. ⋯ The partial pressure of oxygen and oxygen saturation of arterial blood ≥6 hours after operations reported higher, the duration of ventilation was shorter, and numbers of re-intubation processes reported fewer for patients of the PPN cohort than those of the PPB and the PPP cohorts (P < .05 for all). The hospital length of the stay of patients in the PPN cohort was fewer than those of the PPB and the PPP (P < .0001 for both) cohorts. Pre and postoperative nurse-guided incentive spirometry with a spirometer following cardiac surgeries would have better postoperative pulmonary outcomes and fewer hospital stays than those of postoperative-only or pre and postoperative physiotherapist-guided breathing exercises (level of evidence: IV; technical efficacy stage: 5).

Osteoporosis (OP) has emerged as a major global public health issue due to its high prevalence, unknown pathogenesis, and lack of specific drugs for prevention and treatment. Studies have demonstrated that acupuncture in combination with Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is effective in treating OP. However, there is a scarcity of experience and high-quality evidence. A network meta-analysis and systematic review were used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in combination with CHM for the treatment of OP. ⋯ The research will provide reliable evidence for the clinical use of acupuncture in combination with CHM in dealing with OP.
