Several studies have reported that antioxidants exert both preventive and inhibitory effects against tumors. However, their causal effects on small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) remain controversial. Herein, we explored the causal effects of 6 antioxidants on SCLC by combining a genome-wide association study database and the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. ⋯ We found a causal relationship between carotene and SCLC using two-sample MR analysis and sensitivity analysis (P = .02; odds ratio = 0.73; 95% confidence interval: 0.55-0.95). In contrast, there was no causal relationship between other examined antioxidants and SCLC. We found that diet-derived circulating antioxidants could afford protection against SCLC, and carotene is the causal protective factor against SCLC.

The implementation of a treat-to-target (T2T) approach has been widely recommended for achieving optimal outcomes in gout treatment, as substantiated by a wealth of compelling evidence. However, a paucity of knowledge exists regarding the barriers hindering effective T2T management in China. This study seeks to investigate the factors contributing to treatment failure within the context of the T2T strategy. ⋯ A poor medication adherence rate of 55.29% (n = 235) was observed, with lower rates of poor medication adherence associated with the use of febuxostat (OR = 0.35; 95% CI 0.14-0.83; P = .02), uric acid levels exceeding 360 µmol/L (OR = 3.05; 95% CI 1.84-5.12; P = .00), moderate patient education (OR = 2.28; 95% CI 1.29-4.15; P = .01), moderate diet control (OR = 1.98; 95% CI 1.17-3.41; P = .01), and poor diet control (OR = 3.73; 95% CI 1.26-12.83; P = .02). The rate of T2T implementation in China is notably low among patients undergoing urate-lowering treatment of gout beyond 6 months. Importantly, medication adherence demonstrates a significant association with T2T outcomes.

Recent epidemiological research suggests a possible negative correlation between Helicobacter pylori infection and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, conflicting studies have provided unclear evidence regarding these causal relationships. Therefore, recommending specific prevention and treatment strategies for H. pylori infection and IBD is challenging. ⋯ Based on our MR research, no direct correlation was observed between H. pylori infection and IBD risk. This implies that eradicating H. pylori may not provide substantial benefits in preventing or treating regional IBD, and vice versa. Nevertheless, the use of H. pylori serological index substitution has limitations, and further research using histological diagnosis and additional MR studies is required to comprehensively assess the link between H. pylori infection and IBD.

Pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) is a rare malignant tumor primarily originating from the pulmonary artery's intima or subintima. Approximately one-third of cases are classified as undifferentiated type. Its clinical manifestations lack specificity, dyspnea is the main symptom but can also present with chest pain, cough, hemoptysis, and other discomforts, making it prone to misdiagnosis as pulmonary embolism (PE). ⋯ PAS can be easily misdiagnosed as PE. If a diagnosis of PE is made, but anticoagulation or even thrombolytic therapy proves ineffective, and there is no presence of PE causative factors such as deep vein thrombosis in the lower extremities, or D-dimer levels are not high, one should be cautious and consider the possibility of PAS.

The improvement of digestive cancer survival results in increased morbidity of noncancerous comorbidities. This study aimed at clarifying causes of death (COD) and predicting overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed with liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic cancer. We used the Surveillance, Epidemic, and End Results database to extract information. ⋯ Noncancerous COD accounted for larger part in gallbladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma. Noncancerous COD showed an upward trend as follow-up time extended and the majorities were diseases of heart, cerebrovascular disease, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. The novel OS-nomograms can provide personalized prognosis information with satisfactory accuracy.
