Uganda enforced several stringent restrictions such as night-time curfews, travel bans, school closure, and physical and social distancing among others that constituted a national lockdown to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These restrictions disrupted the delivery of health services but the impact on outcomes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care has not been rigorously studied. We evaluated the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on outcomes of HIV care among people living with HIV (PLHIV) aged ≥15 years in Kampala, Uganda. ⋯ The overall mean age was 32.7 ± 8.8 years. In the exposed group relative to the comparison group, viral load testing (OR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.59-1.78) and viral load suppression (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.110-1.63) increased while retention (OR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.70-0.81) and mortality (OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.64-0.88) reduced. Among PLHIV in Kampala, Uganda, viral load testing and suppression improved while retention and mortality reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions due to new approaches to ART delivery and the scale-up of existing ART delivery models.

The purpose of the present study was to clarify clinical outcomes of elderly patients with soft tissue sarcoma who underwent surgery neither with neoadjuvant nor adjuvant chemotherapy. The median follow-up period was 46.3 (range 6.7-99.0) months. All patients underwent surgical resections. ⋯ Tumor resections with adequate margins might, at least in part, have contributed to the decent survival ratio regardless of histological grade. Twenty-six consecutive patients aged ≥ 70 years, who underwent surgical resections of soft tissue sarcoma between January 2013 and December 2019, were included. SSS were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method, and the relationships between SSS and clinical parameters were evaluated by Cox proportional hazards analysis.

The aim of this study is to investigate changes of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets before and after treatment with pembrolizumab for advanced oral cancer and its clinical sig-nificance. ⋯ Pembrolizumab can regulate changes of T lymphocyte subsets in patients with advanced oral cancer, improve immune status of patients, there is no obvious adverse reaction. Monitoring changes of lymphocyte subsets during treatment can predict effect of immunotherapy.

This study analyzed the factors affecting the health-related quality of life of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) according to age. We also aimed to determine appropriate strategies to improve their quality of life. Data from the Korea Health Panel Survey (2009-2016) were used in this study. ⋯ In addition, it was found that the quality of life decreased by a factor of 0.754 in patients who drink alcohol. In order to improve the quality of life of the middle-aged adult population with BPH, it is necessary to reduce sitting time through constant physical activity. Moreover, the cost of medical care should be reduced and the quality of life increased through reductions in surgical treatment, as the burden of medical expenses will degrade the quality of life for older adults.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition that is very common during pregnancy and has negative consequences for both mother and fetus. Insulin resistance has been shown as an important cause in the pathogenesis of GDM and low-level inflammation is suggested to be one of the underlying causes of insulin resistance. We aimed to investigate whether the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which is an indicator of systemic inflammation, is a predictor for GDM. ⋯ We found a significant increase in NLR in the 1st and 3rd trimesters in the GDM group compared to healthy pregnant women, which supports that systemic inflammation starts in the early stages of pregnancy and continues throughout pregnancy. We also reported a positive correlation between NLR and fasting plasma glucose and body mass index in both trimesters. We showed that first trimester NLR independently predicted the development of GDM.
